Today I had an interesting conversation with my pastor. Today we talked about what kind of music I should make. Of course I should make Christian music, but how and using what instruments and lyrics? This is a battle that is really hard for me because for almost all of my life, I have believed that using any instrument would suffice just as long as the lyrics are appropriate. That is not what the church, which I so lovingly believe is saying the right thing, believes in. They believe that the music needs to be different as well, talking about instruments. I can understand their viewpoints because they think that it’s a gateway to Rock and Roll. I actually see that, I can see that it leads people into rock and roll because in a sense it is rock and roll. Here’s the catch, my pastor doesn’t want to condemn any instruments because it’s not like they’re bad but they’re not worshipping God. Now here’s the thing that I need to understand
This is my choice. Whatever sort of music I create would be my choice, whether it’s pop, hip-hop, rock, or orchestral music, my God needs to come first. I’m not saying that it’s wrong to go with those genres, even though in a sense it is, but I am saying this. What would God say about this whole thing? Would he agree with my pastor? Or would he say something different? Would he say that it’s o.k. to worship him with the electric guitar? Or would he say that he prefers the acoustic better? Ultimately it’s not really the instruments that make the song bad, it’s the people and what is their message to the world. So, let’s talk about a few things, first, it can lead to rock and roll and that is not good. Second, the people who deliver the message that we all like so much does not have a good foundation in God. And lastly, having that type of rhythm and instrumentation, would it really be pleasing to God? Or would it be more pleasing to us?
The answer!
I feel like both of these sides are incorrect in their own ways. On one side you have people who are really not delivering the message of Jesus Christ, through their ministry, actions, or even lyrics. On the other hand, you have people who prefer the old instruments and ways much more because if you stray from it, then that will lead you to rock and roll and it won’t please God. So, which way do I pick?
I pick the orchestra
Please do not be mad at me for this, I love music and I would hate to depart from the genre of music that has basically brought me up, but I agree with the pastor on a lot of things. For one, I do think that it can lead you to Rock and Roll because it is Rock and Roll. I do feel like it’s not all bad, however, I need to worship God with the things that God would want me to worship him with. I am turning a new leaf and will be pursuing sacred music from now on. That is what I will aim to write and that is what I’m going to do with my music journey. I know that God will be the one who provides…. All the way.
