I am a strong advocate of prayer. Prayer makes a Christian stronger, separates the determined Christian from the Christian who is lukewarm, makes a Christian’s relationship closer to God, etc. etc. But how exactly should we pray? Are there any rules in learning how to pray? Should we repeat the same thing over and over again until we get an answer? Should we pray about anything and everything? These are all valid questions and we will dive into this subject right now.
How to pray:
We need to pray the same way that Jesus prayed. Not exactly the same but in the same manner that he prayed. In Matthew 6 Jesus taught us how to pray and how does the scripture read? “Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and power and glory forever amen.” When Jesus was teaching the people how to pray, he gave us this example. It’s not something to be repeated over and over again, however, we can use it as a guide on how we should pray. How does he start off with? He starts off with glory to God, he praises God in the beginning to give God his much deserved praises. Then he goes into praying for what we need, the bible always says that God provides our needs, he doesn’t give us our greed, but rather he gives us our needs. It’s okay for us to ask of our wants too but just know that those wants might not be what God wants and he will choose to have it his way. Afterwards, we ask God to forgive us of our sins. We can be specific as to what our sin is and God would take it nonetheless. Lastly, it says to lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Because God can use tests to strengthen our faith, however, tests can be failed and that’s when it becomes evil of us. So, this verse is basically saying, take us away from those tests because we know that we can fail.
Do not use vain repetitions
In the same chapter that Jesus taught us how to pray, he also taught us what not to do. He clearly states to not use vain repetitions because it’s like what the heathen do. In this time the scribes and the Pharisees would repeat the same things over and over again in their prayers and Jesus was trying to instruct the people that praying in that manner is incorrect. It’s okay to have a prayer on your mind and if it is indeed on your mind and is convicting you, then it’s okay to pray about it.
Should we pray about anything and everything?
The short answer is yes! You can pray about everything and anything! The long answer, God is our father and as a father, you can go to your father for absolutely everything because he loves you, so trust in your God and pray about anything and everything, it doesn’t matter how big or small, or absurd, or wild your prayer might be, pray to God about everything because he loves you that much. I’m not saying that God is going to say yes to absolutely everything that you throw at him because God is a god of answer and law too, but we can pray to him about everything and if there is something wrong, then we can trust that God will answer us in the right way.
Well guys that’s it for this blog post, I hope that I have answered your guys’ question about how to pray, my last bit of advice that I can give to you about prayer is, write down what you’re going to pray about first before you pray about it because this actually develops our prayers significantly. I started doing this about a few months ago and every time I write down my prayers, I just go on and on and on praying about things that I didn’t even know I wanted to pray about. I learned that from a preacher on the radio. I honestly have to stop myself from going on any further because I come up with more and more and more until I just run out of time. When I write down my prayers, I could pray to God for the whole night and not get tired of it. It’s so much fun because I feel like someone is actually listening to me, and God is listening to me and he is working hard day and night making sure that he answers my prayers. Thank you guys so much for listening in on this blog post, I hope that I have been an encouragement to you guys, please read your bible, go to church, pray, and love God above all else.
