Hello everyone! I have been songwriting for a few years now and I am here to share with you some of the tips that I have obtained throughout my life about songwriting. Songwriting for the Lord is such a blessing and it is a chance to use your talents for the Lord. Whenever I song write, I think of a couple of things. First I lay the basis of my song, then I develop the lyrics and melody, and finally I finish off with a strong chorus and hook. But there are a few other aspects that I look at when I write a song, let’s talk about them.

 How I start

First I start off with the chords. The chords to me are so essential to the song. There is rhythm and harmony in chords and it just builds the song from the ground up without having to do much. I first start off in any key and start with a I-V-vi-IV chord progression. If I want to deviate from that chord progression, I will do so when I’m making the melody or lyrics. But to start off, it’s usually I-V-vi-IV.

Usually around this time is when I decide what the rhythm will be like and also what meter I’m going to be in. I usually stick with 4/4 time but sometimes I go into ¾ or 6/8. I have made songs in cut time but that’s really rare.

Next

The thing that I do after that is I start singing hooks. Just basic hooks or hooks that I make up. Whatever sounds really good and strong is what I will use for the song. There is a particular hook that is stuck in my head right now, but I am looking to make my hooks more diverse and developed.

Along with this time I will start to think about what I want to say. What am I talking about? Since I am a Christian musician, I am usually talking about the glory of God. Sometimes I will talk about spiritual things or start making a hymn but for the most part, it’s talking about God.

Another thing that I just recently started to do is make metaphors or similes as to what I want to say. These metaphors or similes will make my lyrics shine bright. Also that I just recently started to do is make imagery with my music. I make the lyrics with painting a picture in mind.

Lastly

The last thing I do is repeat the last few choruses because I feel like that makes a huge impact in the song. After I finish the song, I also play the song over and over again until I can’t get it wrong because I believe that I should practice how I preach.

Some tips

Use repetition to your advantage. Music is actually very repetitive and repeating the same lines twice or the same melody twice or even the same chords over and over again can make a lasting impact on your song. So, find where you can repeat and start repeating.

Keep writing! Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither were you. So write your heart out until you can’t write anymore. Make song after song and don’t get frustrated by the fact that you haven’t made a million dollars yet, good lasting riches take time to make money.

Make as many hooks as possible! Your hooks are always going to be needed in your songs, and having melodic, rhythmic or lyrical hooks in your toolbox will definitely help you in succeeding in this music career. Make every line as if though you were making a hook. Keep your best hooks for the chorus.

Develop your sense of rhythm! A good musician can take a line and make it as interesting as possible, using rhythm. Rhythm can add spice to your boring song!

Study songs! Listen to the songs that you like and study them, where does the next note go? How do they play that chord progression? How do they say those words? What words are they using?

Anyways that’s my take on making Christian songs. Ultimately what separates our music from the world’s music is our lyrics so develop your lyrics, your hooks, and your rhythm to the best of your abilities and you should be a rock and rolling rock star.
