Sometimes with my atheist friends, I get asked the question, “why does suffering occur?” It’s a good question, but one that I feel like is too easily asked. If there is a sovereign god in the world and he is all good, why then does he allow people to suffer? Fair enough I say, they believe that no god exists and I believe that God does exist. So, why does God allow suffering to happen? Let’s talk a little bit about this shall we?
God has answered this question in the bible
In the book of Job, God compares the world to two creatures, either mythological or real at the time, but he compares the world to these two creatures. Both of them are beautiful yet wild and dangerous. God clearly explains to Job that the world is both perfect and dangerous. God has asked us, as humans that we are to trust in God’s holy timing and direction in life. And that’s basically God’s answer to Job. Job had been asking God why do bad things happen to good people if God is righteous and blesses the good. That was God’s answer, the world is both perfect and dangerous and we are to trust in God for everything. God never says, oh bad things happen because of this and that, but rather, he’s asking us humans to trust in him because God knows what is best.
What do I think of that?
I think that that is the most holy response that I could ever hear to a question like that. The words are perfect, the imagery is holy, everything about the response was perfect. So, now I trust in God that even though this world is wild and dangerous, I will trust in God that God knows what is best for this world.
I remember one time I was struggling in my own troubles and I had asked God, why is this happening to me? I haven’t done anything wrong, or so I thought. But then I started to reflect on my life’s decisions and I started to realize that I have committed sin in my life. Even though every day I do my best to listen to what God is saying to me, even though every day I do my best to go to God, I always commit sin and that sin, no matter how small it is, separates me from God and makes me imperfect. I was praying to the Lord about these things and sure enough he answered my prayers with the reflection of my very own sins. I immediately started to ask God for forgiveness. The Lord put it in my heart to ask for forgiveness because he was right.
