As Christians, we should always strive to perfect our relationship with God. Sometimes submitting to God means that you should stop doing what you are doing already. Sometimes we need to stop those nights where we don’t pray. We need to stop not reading the bible. We need to stop doing a lot of things and ultimately it will be God who helps us to do these things. I have some tips on how to break bad habits because I have gone through my fair share of bad habits, let’s start.
Practice the good habits
If you never start, you never will start! When you try and break the bad habits, try and start the good ones. If you start the good habits, then that will kick out the bad habits from your life.
I remember when I was first starting to play the guitar, playing the guitar requires determination and skill and effort. The worst thing that you could do when you first start playing the guitar is to not build the habit of practicing. That is the first and foremost thing that you need to kick. Why? Because if you don’t practice and have those early sessions, then you will never get the hands that play the guitar fast enough, strong enough, or anything like that.
What is recommended by a lot of guitar teachers, including me, is to start off by practicing half an hour every day the things that you need to practice. The way that I broke up my guitar practices is 10 minute warm up, and then the rest of the time practicing the song that I was working on. I will be completely honest with you guys, when I first started playing guitar, I would play for hours and hours on end, in the summer time I would play from sun up to sun down. Anyways, that’s unhealthy but I managed to be one of the best musicians in my school. Why? Because I built the habit of practicing music.
Put something in your life that motivates you to do the good habits
What a mouthful right? Anyways, For me, what actually got me to get rid of my bad habit that I had for a while was doing things that were good, holy, and meaningful in life. I remember I used to have a bad habit, and the way that I kicked the bad habit was by playing the guitar. It was so strange, I would play the guitar for 8 hours on end and then finally when it was time to do the bad habit, I just didn’t want to do it. Instead, I was focusing on the guitar all the time.
In a way, every time I played the guitar, I would fantasize that I was on stage playing in front of millions of people and that kind of drove me to play the guitar more and more every day.
Now it’s songwriting. I spend a lot of my time songwriting because songwriting is so cool! I am also writing for the Lord so that puts another driving force towards my songwriting.
Get ready for relapses.
It’s no surprise that when you are kicking a bad habit, you will slip up every once in a while. However, what you need to do is remind yourself that you are trying to do something that is difficult and that it will be worth it in the end.
I have a bad habit that I have right now and I have actually started to kick the habit. I am so proud of myself because I have stopped doing the bad habit for months now and I haven’t looked back. This is going to make me stronger, this is going to make me closer to God, this is going to develop myself so much.
I don’t care too much when I relapse because I know that relapses happen, therefore I will maintain my integrity with God for he is worth it.
When you fall
When you fall, get back up! Don’t give up what you are doing because the reward is worth the pain, the effort, the struggle. God created the moon, the earth, the sun, he created you! Have faith in him and in him alone because that is when you will have the strength to keep going when you should’ve quit long time ago.
I have had this bad habit of mine ever since I was a kid, and you know what? I haven’t given up on quitting this bad habit. I should’ve quit long time ago, I should’ve stopped already, however, there is a spirit inside of me that says, keep going. There is something inside of me that says, don’t give up. There is something that is stronger than me telling me, it’s not over. That thing is Jesus.
The Lord is good because he has given me the will to do the things that are good. The lord sees me and has mercy on me every day. The Lord gives me strength in the heat of the battle. The Lord is the one who picks me up when I fall. I won’t give up quitting this bad habit because I want to worship the Lord. I could go through my entire life doing this bad habit, but I will not quit, quitting this bad habit.
Go to God
The best piece of advice that I can tell you about quitting bad habits is to go to God. God will be the one to give you strength to quit this bad habit. God has the power and strength to do those kind of things. I know that he can do it for you because he loves you.
Conclusion
Life can give us all really bad habits because it’s life. Life has so many things that can cause all of us to trip up, so hold on to God and don’t give up the things that are important to you.
