How to stay authentic

So, what is being authentic? Being authentic means that you tell the truth right? It means that you’re honest with yourself and with others about who you are and what you represent. As a Christian, I believe that being authentic is the first step in being an honest person. The bible does say that God hates a lying tongue, so wouldn’t it be wise if we were authentic? Anyways, here is my number one tip as to how to stay authentic.

Be honest with yourself

            If you’re not honest with yourself, how do you expect to be honest with other people and when it is the most difficult to be honest. If you encounter a time when it is difficult to be honest and you lie, you know that you have failed. Why? Because lying, as basic of a human instinct as it is, shouldn’t even cross our minds when we are involved in a difficult situation. When we are faced with difficulties, the truth should be on our minds. Of course, we have to know how to say the truth, because it’s not like if I see a friend and he asks me what is my honest opinion about something, it’s not like I’m going to tell him, oh that sucks. No! I have to be honest in a nice way. You can be honest and not hurtful, just think about what you want to say.

            I remember that when I was going through high school and middle school, I wanted to be an honest guy. I was so honest that it hurt me, it literally hurt me. Anyways, I quickly learned something, when I lied to people, the first person that I lied to was myself. I lied to myself and convinced myself that what I was saying was true when in all reality it was false. Imagine how lost I was? So, one time I said a lie and I believed it too. That night, I looked at myself justifying all of the lie and then I said to myself, “wait that was a lie?” haha. I was getting stressed out over a lie! And so, I said to myself, well I need to be honest with myself, I don’t approve of that! Or I can’t remember what I thinking of that was brought it up to my mind. Anyways, the point is being honest means being honest with yourself too.

            Anyways, that’s my take on being authentic. I feel like being authentic is all about being honest and I hope that you do too. Thank you all for listening in on this blog post.
