Tattoos have their place in history. From being works of art on a person’s body, all the way to criminal organizations, tattoos have been used to express and symbolize what is important to the person wearing the tattoo and also to show different parts of their lives. Tattoos have also been used to just be colorful works of art on a person’s body so that way, they can basically just show off. However, should we as Christians be a part of this act? Should we put tattoos on ourselves to symbolize Christianity or maybe other important things in our lives? Let’s find out shall we?
Tattoos, a brief history
In the time of moses and the early Israelites, tattoos were usually a symbol for criminals. People were tattooed based upon the crime that they committed. For the most of history, tattoos had a negative connotation to it because one, it explicitly states in the bible that tattoos are not good and that it is against God’s will that we should have them.
Literally it says you can’t mark your skin with anything.
Today, tattoos are still used for criminals, however, they have a different meaning for a lot of people nowadays. Nowadays you can put on a tiger, a lion, a musical note, a guitar, cool drawings that are stunning!
I’ll be honest here, sometimes I see tattoos and I get jealous because I wish I had that tattoo. I’m sure that you all have seen those visually stunning tattoos because they’re all over the internet.
So, should we have them?
In my opinion no. we shouldn’t have them. Not only because it often times symbolizes criminality, but also because in the old testament, it explicitly states that we are to not mark ourselves.
Some people say, “German that was in the old testament, what about after Jesus died?” Let me share with you something that one of the first preachers said when he confronted another member about something similar. He said that the law is meant to show us what is ungodly. Even though God forgave us for those ungodly sins, doesn’t mean that you should go out and commit every ungodly thing out there.
I’ll give you an example, the bible says to not commit murder, alright that’s murder, why do not commit murder? Because it’s bad right? Well the bible teaches us that if God didn’t tell us that it was bad, we would not know that it was bad. We need the law in order to differentiate what is Godly and what is not Godly.
Same thing with sex. It’s still ungodly to have sex outside of marriage. The first preachers of the church explicitly stated that if you cannot control your body, then marry! Why? Because God knows that we need to do those things with someone because it’s part of our nature, so God wanted it to be something holy and sacred, not lustful.
