Now what do I mean by Christianity and Catholicism? Aren’t they the same? Do they not believe in similar things? Well yes and no. Christianity as we know of it today is a belief in Jesus and having a personal relationship with the Lord. Catholicism is a belief that believes in a few different things. Now, I am speaking from the perspective of a protestant, Baptist, Christian. So, if I sound biased towards Christianity or if I have a tone of awe towards Catholicism, then well you know why that is so. Anyways, let me share with you all what Christianity in the modern sense is and what Catholicism is in my perspective.
Christianity
To me, Christianity is the belief in Jesus. It is the belief in an almighty God, the one true God. It is the belief that what he says is true and that we need to adhere to all of his commands and instructions.
This places less of an emphasis on traditions because traditions can come and go but our faith in Jesus must stay.
Catholicism
Catholics I feel like believe a lot in traditions, they believe in the prayers to saints and that saints will pray for them in heaven. I am not sure why they believe this, however, the sole reason why Jesus died on the cross was because that way we wouldn’t need a mediator between us and God, Jesus is the medium which we can communicate with God. Jesus is the sole reason why we can go to God.
Because of Jesus, we do not need to go through anybody else to get to him. That is one of the reasons why I personally don’t believe in Catholicism. Their prayers to saints is not biblical.
Also, they believe that praying to Mary is something that God has asked us to do.
I know that the bible says that generations of people would call Mary blessed and it’s true, I personally think that Mary is blessed, however, that’s not a reason for me to pray to her.
They call her the mother of God and I don’t believe that. I believe what the bible says and the bible says that God was always here and God will always be here.
This is by no means a definitive guide to Christianity and Catholicism, Therefore this should be looked at with careful eyes. Don’t go off and call every Catholic a heretic because that’s not true either.
Now, this last bit of advice that I must give to you all. I remember once when I was in bible school, I said to this preacher, “Preacher, I like this girl but she’s a Jehovah’s witness, do I go with her?” and he said, “Will, as long as the church is a bible believing church and loves God, she could be a Mormon and it would be okay.” He said to me, that a wife needs wisdom like a lot of things in life, so the question isn’t what religion is she, even though that matters. The questions revolves around her relationship with God and how close she is to God.
Now, I personally go to a fundamentalist, Baptist, church, however, I’m not saying that my church is perfect by any means. There are some things that my church believes in that I personally don’t believe in.
I know for a fact that every church has their flaws because every church has man running it.
Therefore, we need to find churches that look for God and not man.
Personally, my dad is a Catholic, I am a Christian and my mother is a Christian. I was mainly involved with the church because of my mother.
However, I am not Christian because of my mother. I am Christian because I believe that believing in Jesus Christ is the right way. I believe that Jesus is the only true way, I believe that God is righteous in all of his decisions and therefore, I will obey him. I know that I’m going to heaven because I believe in Jesus and I hope that the rest of the world does the same.
This blog post is not intended to bash Catholicism, I’m just explaining my reason as to why I am Christian and not Catholic. I know there are a lot of Catholics out there that are like, “we call ourselves Christian-Catholic.” I know I know, so if you’re Catholic and I offended you, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to offend you. Understand brothers and sisters in Christ that this is just one lost soul talking to another.
I hope that we all can develop a personal relationship with Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit. I pray that we all get to know them very well and that our lives will eventually show that.
