So, I struggle with this as well. How can I make new lyrics when the blood of the lamb saves my soul really sums it up? Well, that’s a really shallow approach to your faith. I mean seriously your king has died for you so that you may go to heaven, and all you can say is the first thing that you ever learned? Let’s talk about how to make new lyrics and what are some ways that we can practice writing new lyrics as a Christian songwriter.
First off, pray!
Sometimes, us songwriters like to say that we were inspired divinely by some outside source that was just convicting us to write this song. That’s a load of horseradish.
Ok, ok, that was a joke. Some songs are written purely off of inspiration and in some instances they are the ones that sound best out of the whole album. However, that’s a minority of the songs that you hear on the radio. The majority of songs, take work and practice and do overs again and again for at least a few days.
So, there are two lessons to be had here.
One, you have to pray to God to inspire you divinely and make songs that sound really good. The inspiration that you get ultimately comes from God and so asking God for help in the time of your work will help you because now God is helping you to work. You can’t go wrong with prayer.
The second thing is that after you have asked God to inspire you, you have to ask God to help you to work hard. God knows that sometimes it’s difficult to get up out of bed and work at 4 in the morning. However, God loves the hard worker. God blesses the hard worker. So, if you wake up and start off the day songwriting, ask God to help you work and he will.
Second, get to know God on an intimate level
No one can get to know God the way that they should. However, we should at least get to know God enough that we can talk about him.
If you don’t feel as if though you have a fire for God, then I’m sorry but maybe you’re not ready, yet! Anyone can talk about God, but in order to preach or sing for him or start a ministry in his name takes a level of commitment that ultimately needs to be from God and it has to come from a mature Christian.
I’m not saying that you can’t worship God or sing to God without a strong commitment to him because you can praise him all day and night without any former anything.
What I am saying is that in this day and age, you have to be an example to lead others so that everyone gets an idea as to who a Christian should be.
Once you start your life as a Christian, it’s time to forget about your past. Even though some consequences may occur, just have faith that God will be by your side no matter what. God will give you the strength to get through all the challenges that life will face you.
Third, you must practice writing lyrics
So, lyrics are a muscle that need to be exercised on a daily basis in order to grow. If you want to be a lyricist or even a songwriter, this skill must be advanced enough to actually be called a songwriter! Haha! I mean like, how are you supposed to call someone a writer when their writing skills is some trash? It doesn’t make sense.
My sister is actually a music education major and she gave me some tips as to how to write a song. The tips were, “practice writing lyrics as if though you’re writing poetry. Try and make poems and make a lot of them so that way your lyrics can become better.” So I started that approach and now she said that all I have to do is find original words and my lyrics would be ideal.
Use imagery
So, I learned this from a songwriter from Berklee University. They said that powerful lyrics will often times give off imagery. Paint the picture with words and you would have made some gold.
However, there are ways of doing this in a song.
In the beginning of the song, write words that explain the situation. When you get to the meat and bones of the song, that’s when you use imagery. So like, maybe the first line would use explanation words and the second third and fourth line would use imagery. It paints the picture and captivates the audience.
Everyone uses imagery in their lyrics: Rock, Pop, Reggae, Rap, Country. Everyone uses imagery.
Broadcast
I know that I haven’t talked about salvation in this blog post and that this blog post was a primarily music post, but if anyone out there feels alone or frightened or lost, I’m here to tell you that I’m not going to help you.
Rather, God is the one who is going to help you. God is the one with the power to change your life for the better. God can perform miracles, heal the lame, the sick, create, destroy, etc. etc. So, if you need help, God is the one to look out for. God himself will help you and God himself will guide you.
Thank you all for listening in on this blog post. I hope that I have been an encouragement and inspiration to you guys. Please like, comment, share, and subscribe. Remember to pray, read your bible, go to church, and love God above all else. German Gonzalez, signing out!
