What are some things that a Christian musician should have? What are some essential skills that a Christian musician should have? Today, we are going to talk about what are some things that a modern Christian musician should be able to do, let’s get started.

The modern Christian musician

The modern Christian musician should have a wide array of skills and talents, some of them not in the field of music. A Christian musician should have writing skills, typing skills, songwriting skills, instrument skills, voice skills, music production skills, mixing skills, skills in a day job (whatever that may be), people skills, networking skills, and the list could go on for a while but I’m going to highlight the main points.

The modern Christian musician doesn’t need to have a whole mass ton of gear, but some things are preferred. Gear could include guitar/piano, metronome, computer, interface for recording, microphone, capo, picks, mixing speakers, and of course all of your living essentials.

Let’s go over a few of the skills and gear that you would need and why they would be important.

Skills: Writing/typing

No matter what type of profession you want to do, you are going to have to write. Being a musician is no different. Being able to have a good form of communication when writing, will prove to benefit you, short term and long term. So definitely learn how to write.

Not only is writing found in blog posts, but also in YouTube channels, press kits, demo submissions, emails, letters, lyrics, etc. etc. so learning how to write will benefit you at some point.

Typing and writing kind of go hand in hand. In modern times, you type out everything because it looks a whole lot neater than writing it. It’s more legible and more formal in almost all circumstances, I can currently type at 80 words a minute, not too shabby.

Songwriting skills

At some point in your music career, you are going to have to write songs. I’m not speaking to the lawyers or agents out there, but I am speaking to those musicians who are musicians, haha!

Your input could prove valuable in a songwriting session. Whether you’re a guitarist or lyricist, good vocabulary and imagery lines can get you into recording sessions that are difficult to get into.

Instrument skills

Part of being a musician is well, being a musician! So knowing how to play an instrument, especially guitar or piano, needs to be learned at some point in your career.

If you’re trying to be an artist, then you need the guitar or piano in order to perform at open mic nights or acoustic sessions. Plus, the guitar and piano just sound so soulful and can make very emotional music.

Also, if you want to showcase some of your music, it’s kind of implied that you need to know how you want your music to be shaped or written. So music theory is also a valuable skill to have.

I don’t care what you say, every musician needs to learn how to sing at some point

Singing is your voice. Sometimes producers sing something and as a professional musician, you are supposed to replicate it. I know that’s very difficult to do, but with proper training, anyone can do it.

Also, if you want to express how something should sound, then it is obviously important that you sing it correctly. Otherwise, how is someone supposed to know what you want?

Music production skills

Learning to produce your own music is the polishing touch to your music. You need to learn how to do this because when you’re recording with someone, you need to learn the way that the song is going. How you can add to it.

Mixing skills

This goes hand in hand with the music production skills. Learning to select the proper effects and choosing how much EQ it takes to put on a song is all about practice.

Skills in a day job

Unless you are part of the less than 0.0001 percent of all musicians out there, you probably won’t get into your music career until you are an adult. With that being said, it’s important that you learn how to have a regular 9 to 5 and be good at it.

Who’s going to pay the bills? Certainly not your mom if all she sees is that you are trying to make a music career, which most fail. You need to have a fallback. Anything you do can work if you put in the proper work into it. But sometimes things just fail and you need to have something to get back onto.

Along with a job, you might want to consider getting into college so that way you have something else that can provide for you.

I personally have skills in a few things, one of them is sales, I’m going to college right now, and I also have mental health skills. So, always chase after your dreams responsibly.

People and networking skills

So, when you wanted to get into this whole Christian music scene, you should’ve known that networking would have played a vital role in this journey. It’s really vital in a lot of the things that you do, but when you are a musician, it’s important to get along with people well and develop relationships. They could be your next biggest fan or the A&R representative that you’ve been dying to get a hold of.

Summary

I know that these are a lot of skills to have, especially if you don’t know that this music career can work out. However, when you first start off being a musician, you are going to have to do a lot of the work by yourself. When you achieve success is when you will have different people helping you do different things and even still you’ll be tasked with some other different types of responsibilities.

Learn to do the small things and when it comes time to do the big things, then you’ll be ready.

Broadcast

I know that I didn’t talk about salvation today, but if anyone out there is lost or confused. If there is anyone out there who is seeking answers but can never find it. If there is anyone who is sad or depressed, is battling and battling but just never gets relief, well I’m here to tell you that Jesus is the answer that you’ve been looking for.

Jesus can heal the sick and the lame and he can fix your problems too. So, seek Jesus and God and you will always win.
