There are correct ways to do things and incorrect ways to do things. For all of the good things in life, they all require patience. Do you want to be a professional guitarist? That requires patience. Do you want to be a doctor? That requires patience. Do you want to have a lot of money? That requires patience. Anything good that you want to become requires patience. Being a Christian songwriter is no different.

With that being said, here are some steps that you can take in order to become a Christian songwriter.

Write

It doesn’t matter what you write, it could be lyrics, poems, a blog, articles, essays, it doesn’t matter.

Your writing experience will transfer over to your music. From creating more diverse lyrics and expanding your vocabulary, to just showing you the proper punctuation in as to where to put certain things, writing is as important as the music itself.

If you feel like you don’t know how to write that well, then look up how to write better.

Find out where to put proper punctuation or where to indent for paragraphs. The list is endless. Get a word of the day calendar and start expanding that vocabulary.

I honestly have had a few bouts of good writing experience. Actually when I was in 11th grade, I had a practice test on the AP English essay. I actually scored an 8 on one of the Essays and that’s a really hard thing to do, especially the way that I did it. I had an 8 on the essay with a short essay, it was only like four paragraphs long. My teacher said that she took one look at it and said it was an 8. Just the way that I had written was so professional.

However, THAT WAS IT! Haha! I had 1’s and 2’s for the rest of the year. That means that my writing was no good.

I did not let that stop me from writing in this blog.

I knew that my writing was no good, but I said to myself that I was going to get better through this blog and sure enough, I have.

So write until you can’t write anymore and you will have success.

Force yourself to write when you can’t find inspiration or are in writers block. What I do to overcome writers block is that I just start writing about anything and everything. It’s a big help when you can overcome writers block with ease, but if you are just getting frustrated and can’t seem to think of anything, then maybe it’s time you took a break.

Learn music

In my opinion, it’s not the opinion of some, you should be able to read and write standard notation and tabs. Why? Well because many acoustic sessions are done with acoustic guitars, so you need tabs sometimes to communicate with other guitarists.

Or you should know what standard notation is because that language will pop up in music theory, production, or simply Jargon.

I’ve seen, and it’s not rare, where you have both the standard notation and the tabs written on the same page.

Also, having a basic understanding of how music works will help you to create more diverse and interesting sounds, rhythms, melodies, etc. etc.

Be patient

All good things take time in order for them to work, being a Christian songwriter means that you will be writing lyrics, melodies, chords, and songs for God.

Our creator deserves a good songwriter, don’t you think? He deserves a hard worker, a good Christian, a power prayer, a dedicated individual, etc. etc.

So, if you decide to become all of these things, God himself will give you the desires of your heart.
