So, everyone has a different approach as to how to write a song or create something. Some people define a need for a certain element to be discovered and others improve things that were already laid out.

As a Christian musician, you need to understand how to combine both of those creative processes together. Not only is it important to write about what the preachers have been preaching for all of these years, but it’s also important for us to be original with our vocabulary and sentence structures.

I think that it’s an excellent idea to pray before songwriting and I’m not counting that out of the Christian creative process, but anyways, here is my Christian creative process.

Write

I kind of have a routine set up before I start writing music or lyrics. The routine is this, I take out my phone and I just start writing.

I actually start off with love as a topic and I let my mind free float from there. I feel like God is the perfect candidate to talk about when you’re talking about love, so I start with love in the biblical sense.

I then let my mind float whichever way possible and I end up sometimes with a lyric or a hook that I would like and I base the rest of the song off of that.

I am taking a sort of imagery approach to writing lyrics. I hope to make my lyrics very vivid.

Put chords to the lyrics

If I feel like writing a sad song, then I will of course put on sad chords. If I feel like putting on a happy song, then I put on some happy chords. It’s simple as that. Though oftentimes I kind of mix it up.

What I’ll do is I’ll take sad chords and put happy lyrics to it and it sounds bitter sweet! I like it so much. It sounds nostalgic and inspirational at the same time. It sounds so good!

Then I’ll put a melody to the lyrics

Afterwards, it’s time to put rhythm and notes to the lyrics to make a melody. I’ll play around with different things but I’ll always keep it simple.

I one time heard that all the professionals do is do the basics very well. That’s the only difference between professionals and amateurs, Professionals do the basics very well.

So, keep it simple. Don’t try and reinvent the wheel.

Also, if you look at the pop hits that have been coming out for the past decade or so, they are all relatively simple pieces of work.

So do yourself a favor and the audience a favor, don’t overcomplicate things.

***Now some tips from the professionals***

Repetition is key

If you look at how repetitive things are in music, you’ll notice that almost everything is repeated, the drums, guitar, bass, even the melody is repeated over and over again almost all the time.

I know that there is some music out there that focuses a lot on complex chord changes and patterns, but honestly, that’s just overkill in pop music. If you want to become a pop musician, then it would be best if you listen to a lot of pop music and try and replicate the things that are done in there.

Research how to make better songs

So, there are a plethora of articles and videos online that help with songwriting and production and everything to do with music. So, without a doubt, you can find something online that would teach you what you would want to learn how to do.

I started my quest on how to make better lyrics a long time ago and just now, Berklee has released a few videos that show famous songwriters who share with other people how they write lyrics and chords and melodies and honestly it has transformed my songs. Go check it out.
