So, Christian music has come a long way since the early renaissance composers. Christian music has taken the form of what is now modern pop except with the fact that it has Christian lyrics added to it.

The production, instruments, voice, mixing styles, mastering styles, and even people are used interchangeably between pop and modern Christian music.

I one time heard that Christian music always sounds like a combination of Third Eye Blind and Nickelback. I laughed because it’s true in a sense!

Let’s talk about Christian music and why it is the way that it is.

Christian music follows pop music to an extent

So, Christian musicians have this trend that they follow whatever genre is popular at the time. If you take a look at early 2000’s Christian music, it’s a direct relation to 90’s rock.

Why is that the case? Well because everyone wants a piece of the music pie. If you take a look at all the musical acts that were big and new in the 90’s they were primarily rock, punk, grunge, soft rock groups. I’m not going to deny that there were some big Hip-hop groups, and there were Christian hip-hop artists to arise in the early 2000’s, but the big names were Nickelback, Third Eye Blind, Nirvana, Smashing pumpkins, Matchbox 20, and lesser known bands still had big success. They all revolved around that acoustic softrock/hardrock/ballads music.

Obviously when everyone saw what success they had, they wanted to replicate it for themselves, different bands started to emerge and eventually it came out with this whole punk scene that essentially came from these bands.

I want to be clear that it wasn’t just Christian music that was doing this, everyone was doing this. The only reason why we see Christian music this way is because it’s Christian and we want to label something good, something bad. That’s literally the only reason why we do this.

If you look at all the bands and artists that were coming out at that time, a big majority of them were making that kind of music. It wasn’t until the late 2000’s that things started to change. With Justin Bieber coming out with his R&B pop feel, it really revolutionized pop music.

What happens is that we see something related to God and because of our sin nature, we decide to give it a bad name when we don’t really know that everyone in the whole world was actually doing the same thing.

I actually just heard a Christian song and I honestly thought, wow they sound like every other pop song

So, what happens is that technology advances in all aspects. It advances our gear, our lessons, our voice, our everything.

When something new comes out, it might be the hottest thing since the electric guitar that came out this year. Everyone wants to use the hottest and latest sounds that everyone is using.

So, people use soundpacks and samples that famous composers are selling, and if that famous composer is selling it for little to no dollars, I mean like it’s a win win because that sound or sample is going to make your song sell millions.

Everyone uses these samples, it can be Eminem or Madonna, Third Eye Blind or Steve Curtis Chapman, everyone uses the same samples, it’s just that technology allows us to shift and transform these sounds into a manner that would be suitable for our songs.
