What made me want to become a musician? What instruments did I start off with? How does my musical background make me unique and different? All of these are important questions to ask any musician.

All in all my musical background is different and similar than everyone else’s here let me explain.

My musical background

I always loved music. I always loved the idea of playing music. However my parents were always skeptical about giving me instruments because A, they were expensive and B, they claimed that I would not hold up to my end of the bargain and actually practice the instruments that I was given. Looking back now, I understand completely why that was the case and I understand their point of view.

However, I kept saying to myself that I was going to practice and I would practice until I couldn’t practice anymore. So one day, my dad bought us a keyboard. My dad bought us a keyboard and he said, If you want to learn the guitar, then you’ll first master the keyboard.

I didn’t know what these keyboard skills would have with guitar skills, but I listened to my dad. I didn’t master the keyboard, but I did learn 6 songs on it and some of them were intermediate level music.

So, years went by and my dad bought me a guitar for Christmas when I was in 6th grade. I picked up the guitar and I would not put it down. I started to play the guitar with vigor and intensity in my heart and it was fun!

I would say for sure that my real first musical experience was with the guitar.

            Why?

Because with the guitar is where I learned how to read music and tabs and also music theory.

So, I played guitar for about 3 years and eventually I went back to the piano with the music knowledge that I was being taught at my school and also the music knowledge that I was teaching myself. I was able to put a lot of two and two’s together and sure enough I learned how to read music on the piano. As well as play some songs on it.

All the while I was teaching myself how to play the electric bass. I listened to a lot of secular music back then and Red Hot Chili Peppers was my BAND! Haha! I loved listening to Flea’s bass and it inspired me to pick up the bass.

At the same time I was in a few music programs at my school. I was in the guitar ensemble, choir, marching band, jazz band, and music theory class.

I was an avid musician back in high school and it showed. I eventually won the award from the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. for the most outstanding music student award from the entire school!

Out of the two thousand kids that were in my school, I was nominated as the best! In the Kennedy Center!

Why do I say all of this

Honestly, when I first started to play the guitar, I prayed to God to make me a great musician. Sure enough, God made me a great musician.

That’s not it either! After high school, I went on to do other things in music and right now I am working on my music. I will forever continue to work on my music because I think that God gave me music for a purpose and that purpose is to write songs for him. I believe that.

God does not do things in vain and he did not give me these music skills in vain, so the purpose is real and God has answered my prayer.

My musical influences

When I was a teen, I listened to a lot of punk, rock, Hip-Hop, Rap, pop, and Christian music. Of course all of these things influenced my musical decisions of today, but I chose to do the Christian music, not only because the bible says to worship God with song, but because God is the one who made me a musician. I owe that to God.
