The internet, like with a lot of other things in the music industry, is a blessing and a curse. The upside, there are countless of ways that a promising musician can get exposure to real fans all over the world. You can actually develop a following if you just put in the time and effort. The downside, there are countless of ways that people can exploit musicians using the internet. The internet has caused that musicians don’t get paid as much as how they used to get paid. Therefore, musicians are having to rely on other streams of income to support themselves, let’s talk about this for a second.

The internet as a blessing

For an early musician, the internet is probably the best thing that has happened to a modern musician. You can get free exposure to fans in your community, in your state, in your country, or even in the world.

The only thing that it would be required of you, is time. If you want to make music a full time thing, then you first have to invest in full time hours into your music.

I one time read a book about music marketing. It treated a musician as if though it was a company. The thing is that you need to show what you have to offer to massive amounts of people for little to no money because A: you’re not a millionaire who can invest in advertising dollars and B: it’s the best way to get the right exposure that you want.

In this music marketing book, it told of countless of ways that you can market your music to people. Your music is the product and your fans are your customers, obviously. So therefore, it’s important that you reach out to as many people as possible.

This whole concept of reaching out to as many people as possible with little to no money has never been easier to do. With the help of the internet, you can start a blog or a YouTube Channel and if you work hard at it, then you can walk away with followers, fans, industry insiders such as A&R representatives, Record Executives, Producers, etc. etc.

With that being said, it does take time to build a following on the internet, I started my blog a little over a year ago and I’m starting to gain a decent amount of views every month.

Along with those views comes fans (all of which I am most certainly thankful for.)

Also for an early musician, you can actually sell your music to fans worldwide for very little money. There are platforms out there that for a very low rate, will put your music in Spotify, Apple music, Itunes, Google play, etc. etc.

Also, it’s a good way to connect with other musicians. Your blog or YouTube channel will showcase your talent to people and when they see that you’re a good musician, they will want to collaborate with you.

So, there are tons of ways that you can use the internet to your advantage, now lets talk about the downside to the internet.

The downside

The downside is that you’re going to get robbed from more than anyone out in the world. People are going to easily rob you from your music all the time. If you’re a big artist, you’re the one that’s going to get robbed from the most. Haha, it’s the truth.

Also, any bad exposure to yourself will automatically go up on the internet.

I feel like musicians have a bad rep of a lot of things. I hear so many bad things going on with musicians, but I don’t think that they’re any different from the average joe.

To be honest with you, I think that people should quit judging musicians based off of their sins when they have their own sins to be concerned about.

With that being said, I don’t support a lot of what popular musicians do in their spare time. I think that it’s really not something that they should be proud about. But you know what, God is their judge, not us.
