What were some of my musical influences before becoming a Christian?

I love all kinds of music. Of course being a Christian musician I am biased towards Christian music. I do have secular musical influences, however the thing that got me into music was definitely Christian music.

            I love the sounds of the guitars and drums together and also the rest of the band just wailing at it, it just sounds so fun!

            Let’s talk a little bit about all of my musical influences, shall we?

Rock

            I am honest, I like rock. I like rock and roll, punk, grunge, pop-rock, acoustic rock, etc. etc. It just sounds good to me, I love the way that the voice resonates with the guitars. I love the way that they’re mixed, I love everything about it and to be honest with you, I want to make Christian albums just like that too.

            I actually started out listening to Spanish Christian rock. I absolutely love it, it sounds good to me. I remember hearing this band called Guardian, I loved Loco Devo Estar. That means I must be crazy.

            I love the way that the emotion is put into rock music, it can be aggressive and exciting, or it could be emotional and relaxed.

Rap

            I would be lying if I didn’t disclose with you guys that rap has played a heavy influence in my music. Unless it’s Christian rap, rap is not something that should be listened to by the Christian.

            I remember back when I didn’t really believe in God, I would listen to rap songs for hours and I would learn every lyric too. Since I was a musician, I would learn every lyric in time and beat!

            I remember back when I was in high school, my friends nicknamed me Busta Rhymes. Some of my friends nicknamed me Eminem. They nicknamed me these things because I was a really good rapper and I could rap, actually excellently. I thank God for making me a good rapper.

            When I was around 17 is when I started to take God seriously. I said to myself that I wasn’t going to listen to those songs anymore and I actually deleted those songs off of my music on my computer.

            Actually I deleted most of my music, the only music that I listened to was Christian music.

            I’ll be honest, sometimes I go back to those songs and I listen to them, but they don’t fill my heart like they used to. I think what’s happened is that God has changed my heart and he now has shown me that I don’t want that, what I wanted was him all along.

Pop

            How could we forget about the good old fashioned pop music. When I think of pop music, I think of all the music that I listen to. Because in a sense it is pop music.

            However I know that there is a distinction between mainstream pop and popular music.

            I used to listen to mainstream pop, but then of course I changed my heart for God and sure enough, God is revealing to my heart that those things were wrong to sing about.

            I used to listen to everyone. Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Backstreet Boys, etc. etc. I listened to everything and anything and it was fun, but it wasn’t right.

I’m not trying to bash these artists

            I like these artists, they were my musical influences in life. I believe that God loves them with all his heart, it’s just that, I’m not going to listen to their songs because I just feel like it’s not good for me.
