Listening to music vs. performing music

As a musician, we actually have the option to perform our music. When we perform our music, this actually gives us a chance to create new emotions and change the culture that we have. When we listen to music, we as musicians learn different techniques and styles. Though a lot of songs have the same old I-V-vi-IV Chord progression, there are still tricks that keep the listener hearing this song and wondering to themselves, How did someone make something like this? Therefore we ought to learn from this old songs.

            In this blog article I’m going to discuss the difference between listening and performing music and why both are actually so vital to musicians.

Listening

            When we listen to music, we can draw up inspiration to write a song. The lyrics don’t have to match and as a matter of fact would be advised to not write the exact lyrics. But rather, the music could give us an emotion that sparks a fire inside of us

            Also, when we listen to music, we can see how they structure their songs, making songwriting a whole lot easier.

            I remember I have been listening to music for a big majority of my life. And I remembered that there would always be a verse and a chorus in almost every song. I didn’t know what they were called, but I saw that sections repeated in some manner.

            Since I had been listening to music for a long time, I knew what everyone was talking about when they were referring to the chorus or the hook or bridge and when they described it to me, I instantly had a reference as to how to create my songs.

            Listening to music also sets the tone for the spirit of God. I’m not saying that the spirit is activated at that moment and that we are supposed to start acting wild. But I am saying that the message that is conveyed through music, gives us a perspective of God that transforms what we really see God as.

            If you ever heard Everlasting God by Lincoln Brewster, you will know what I’m talking about. Of course, no song could ever describe the magnitude of God, but when our heart is at full blast knowing of some of the power of God, it becomes easier to follow him.

            This kind of requires wisdom to understand, so pray to God for wisdom.

Performing music

            When we perform music, we show the world just what God is made of. As Christian musicians, our hope is to not show the world what we can do, but rather, what God can do. God can do amazing things and God is always ten steps ahead.

            Performing music can also provide for us. We are to trust in God with what we have. We are to trust in God that God will provide for us if we go with his plan.
