In the past, I talked about all of the things that are wrong with the music industry. Why so many artists fail to become musicians and also what I think could be done differently to overcome those challenges. Today, I am putting it into a new perspective.
As a Christian, we shouldn’t complain about the things in our lives especially when we know that God was the one who gave it to us. Today, I’m not ranting, I’m not complaining, but rather talking about some of the challenges in the music industry and how we can overcome them, let’s get started.
Lack of available jobs in the music industry
Sure if you work really hard you can land a job. But in most cities, there really isn’t that much opportunity for a musician to make a living off of being a musician.
Whenever a musician wants to become a songwriter or an artist or producer, they usually have to travel to a major city where their genre of music is particularly played or performed.
I’ll give you an example, if you want to do country or rock, you usually go to Nashville or LA. However if you want to become a rapper, then you go to New York or D.C. or Miami. It’s just where the music is being played at.
However, virtually anywhere else, you are almost forced to turn your passion of music into education or therapy and that’s really not the way to go either.
Each city should look to expand the opportunities of their music department. In this manner, the economy would actually boom. How many times have you seen a great guitarist? How many times do you witness a phenomenal musician? You hardly ever witness these people because it’s a great talent to have.
Music is a trade and as such, we should be looking to take it as a trade and not a hobby.
How unbelievably difficult it is to get help from anyone
If you’re a solo artist, you need the help from other people in order to become someone successful. No one wants to work unless you provide the money. Everyone feels entitled to a piece of the pie no matter how little they’ve done. And of course, no record label wants to sign you unless you got some rocking tunes and influence.
It’s kind of like who was first the chicken or the egg? No one wants you unless people want you and vice versa.
