There are a plethora of Jobs that you can do if you want to work in the music industry. Ranging from lawyers to artists, songwriters to mixing engineers. The main point is that you have to work and work hard at your craft before you step into a session with other professional musicians. You have to be a good songwriter before you can songwrite with others, etc. etc. Today, we’ll talk about some jobs that you can do in the music industry, let’s get started.

Jobs with music involved directly

The jobs that involve music directly, as in you are part of the music creation process, instrument playing, singing etc. etc. I’ll go over some other details after the music industry afterwards.

Artist

The granddaddy of all jobs in the music industry. Everyone in the entire world has thought about becoming a music artist.

Being an artist requires a lot of detail, it requires careful planning and creation of music. It’s definitely not an easy job to be an artist in the music industry, but it is doable.

I’ve actually thought about becoming an artist myself. However, I don’t know if that’s what I really want to do. It’s actually a lot of work in order to become a music artist.

Like with anything, you have to start somewhere and usually starting somewhere means starting from the very bottom.

If you want to market yourself as an artist, then start writing songs and collaborating with people so that your music shines.

Start with no fans, then 1, then 2, then 5, then 10, as of today, I only have 48 subscribers, all of which I am so grateful for and I know that one day I will have a lot of subscribers.

Play as often as you can, sing as often as you can, play guitar as often as you can, this will make you a more versatile musician and essentially an artist.

I must highlight that for most musicians out there, becoming an artist really means that you can sing or rap. If you want to become a solo artist, you are definitely going to have to learn how to sing or rap. It also depends if you’re doing techno or dubstep. And even still you’re going to have to sing a few times while you’re producing those beats, so singing is an essential.

Songwriter

I am actually striving to become a songwriter.

I know that being an artist can actually give you a lot of power and influence over people, however, I don’t really care too much over those things.

I actually just want to write songs all day long.

If I could have a job where all I would do is write music all day long, I think I would be the happiest guy on earth.

Don’t get me wrong, I am still striving to become an artist, but that’s not the priority. The priority is to write songs all day long. If that means being an artist, then I’ll be an artist, if it means being a songwriter, I’ll be a songwriter.

I’m not trying to downplay the role of the songwriter, because obviously it is something that is required in the music industry.

Producer

A producer is the man in charge of making the song sound polished and clean. A producer will take the raw recordings and add drums, violins, synths, pads, and any extra instrument or noise that is needed to make the music sound good.

I am actually learning how to produce music right now. It’s actually quite a challenge having to learn something this complicated.

Session musician

A session musician is a sort of “hired gun”. A session musician is paid to record a song or an album and is only paid for their time in the studio. They are not full band members. So basically they are offering their drumming, guitar, bass, or any other instruments skills to the person who wants to record their music.

The best session musicians make I believe millions a year, but that’s because they have a track record of making hits. Or they probably have a few solo albums and they sold really well.

Mixing engineer

A mixing engineer is responsible for getting the song ready for the master and also adding artistic effects to make it sound more polished.

Some mixing engineers go through college to learn about mixing and mixing skills and others just get certified to learn how to mix, I got certified.

Some say that the coolest part of the album is the mix, and honestly, sometimes I love to just get a multitrack and just start mixing. It’s too much fun to mix and I love doing it.

Mixing engineers can charge anywhere between 300 to 3,000 dollars per song. Some mixing engineers get a cut of the royalties that are paid to the artists.

And finally mastering engineer

To be honest with you, I don’t know too much about mastering. I have never mastered a song without the help of software. I don’t know what goes on in the mastering process, however, I know that mastering is another art in and of itself. And they can charge a pretty penny to do so too. So watch out for the mastering engineer.

Now on to the business side of things

Lawyers

There are all sorts of lawyers in the music industry that will do different things for you. From shopping your songs around to getting you to play at a great venue, there is so much that you can do with being a lawyer.

On top of the fact that it’s a steady job in a growing field, you need a college degree in order to become a lawyer obviously. Therefore, some think it’s good to be a music lawyer some do not, either way, we need music lawyers to help us musicians out, we could do nothing without them.

A&R Rep

An A&R rep is someone who finds new talent for a record label.

Artists and musicians often look at A&R reps with big hope in their eyes. However, we must be sure that when we see an A&R rep, we must give it our best to impress them. That means not badgering them, not pestering them, always looking to do the respectful thing etc. etc.

The way that you actually get a hold of an A&R rep is through someone usually a producer or lawyer or another A&R rep. and by the time that you get in contact with an A&R rep, you should have already a steady stream of sales and income from the fan base that you’v generated. The A&R rep would have already heard about you so there practically wouldn’t be a need to introduce yourself.

Execs and upper ups

There are a whole lot of upper ups in the music industry that have the power to change your life. I remember I once read a book about a girl who was doing her best to become the next best thing, however, she wasn’t prepared when she got the chance to show what she had. The execs actually let her audition but in the end they did not accept because she was just too ill prepared.

Always be prepared to showcase your music.
