So, you want to build some new habits huh? So, you’re a Christian musician and you want to start building some habits that will get you A,signed, B, more shows, C, more streams, or D, all of the above.

            Let’s get started

Write songs everyday

You wouldn’t be a Christian musician if it wasn’t for the fact of your music. Therefore, your music must be a priority when it comes to becoming a well versed Christian musician.

I remember back when I first started songwriting, the number one advice that I ever got from people and also from other industry insiders was that I should write more songs.

Everyone kept saying to me, just keep writing songs and soon enough, the opportunities will pop up.

I heard another saying from my dad and I can’t remember how it goes but it went something along the lines of, “If you want to make songwriting your career, then you’re going to have to write songs.” I couldn’t agree more to that.

Practice your instrument everyday

Whatever it is that you do best, practice it until people cannot mistake you as the expert in that field.

I remember once I was talking to an older guy and I told him that I have excellent guitar skills. He looked at me and said, no you have good guitar skills, you’re too young to have excellent guitar skills. So I said to him, “I teach Slash how to play guitar!” He honestly couldn’t believe that I was that good at guitar at such a young age too.

I remember another time I was at Guitar Center and I was playing the electric guitars and no one could believe that I was playing the solos to Sweet Child O’mine, One by Metallica, and a few other New Classical pieces.

At that point everyone in the Guitar Center asked me, which one was the best guitar to play and I just said, “ they all do the same but it just depends on what sound you want out of it.” Everyone ooed and ahhed at the fact that I just spoke.

But yeah, become an expert at whatever it is that you do and you will have gone a long way.

Become an expert at something besides music

In today’s society, the modern indie musician has to be good at other things besides music. Why? Because music isn’t always going to pay the bills and you need something sturdy to base your music off of.

Do you think that Demo tapes are cheap? Do you think an album is Cheap? My mixing speakers alone cost 250 dollars each!

I just hit up the recording studio and all I wanted to do was record a 3 track song with voice and two guitars and that alone cost me 100 bucks for two hours of scheduled recording time.

I needed another job to get me into that position to being able to record my music and sure enough it helped me to be good at something else.

Be a content creator

In order for you to market your music, your main options are either putting things on YouTube or writing in a blog.

I write in this blog because I want to share the word of God with everyone.

I want to share the word of God with the world.

However, I do have another motion to doing this blog. I also want to share my music.

I want to share my music with the world and I know that I can do so if I just try!

I remember I have tried to make YouTube videos in the past and honestly it’s a lot of work. I struggled with just shooting out one video a week!

However I heard that, that is a good rate as to how many YouTube videos you should be putting out.

If you just make a lot of content, people will come to your site, trust in God about that.

Pray

As a Christian musician, it is not only our right, but our obligation to pray on a daily basis.

In the music scene, a lot of bad thigns can happen to where we won’t be  able to write music or perform our songs, therefore, we must be constantly praying to God about the things in our lives.

I have heard a few times in my life, “Are you worried, you gotta pray about it. Are you tired? You gotta pray about it. Do you want something? You gotta pray about it!” So, pray about all of the things in your life and you will be on your way to becoming a great Christian musician.

Read the bible

As a Christian we have to read the bible in order to get the word of God in us. If we starve ourselves from what is God, then our spirit struggles to be the thing that it needs to be.

Go to Church

            Enough said about that one.

All seriousness. If we don’t actively participate in Church, how can we call ourselves Christians? Isn’t a part of being a Christian to go to church?

Not only do a lot of Church’s agree with going to church, but also the bible itself says that we are to listen to the word of God, that means that we need to go to church.
