So let me get this straight, you wrote a song last year and now you have the guts to try and start your Christian album again this year. You recorded a rough demo maybe two years ago, and now you have been inspired to write some more music.

I get it, you want to be a more productive Christian songwriter/musician. I too have been there in the past. From being a couch potato to having too much work, there are a lot of things in life that can get us away from music.

            Let’s talk about this.

Start off small

When beginning any journey, it starts with a single step. You’re not going to pump out 3 well written and well sung songs on your first day of songwriting. As a matter of fact, your first few songs that you’ll write are going to take months to write and they won’t be any good.

I remember back when I first started out songwriting, I had made a song and I got a lot of positive feedback from my friends. I even got one of my friends who told me that he wanted his brother, who is a DJ, to put it in the club.

However, there are a few things that you should know before I tell you that it won a few things. I had already been studying how to create songs for a few years.

I knew the process, I know the story, I just had to sing it.

And also, I am the exception, not the rule. I’m not trying to sound cocky here, but it’s the truth.

Therefore, if you know how to play the guitar or the piano, go ahead and start learning how to actually make songs that become hits.

Everything in this world is teachable, so therefore, teach yourself how to create great songs and sure enough people will start listening to it.

Start off with 30 minutes of songwriting every day. Then, move up to an hour, eventually you’ll be writing songs for extended periods of time and you won’t even notice it.

Specifically, start a blog.

I know I have said in the past to either start a YouTube channel or a blog, however, I would prefer for specifically songwriters to start a blog.

            Why?

Well because it’s writing skills and it’s writing skills that are going to benefit your songwriting.

I remember back when I first started songwriting, I didn’t know where to go with my lyrics, I thought that I could just say whatever I wanted and get away with it.

However, my sister, who is becoming a music teacher, went up to me one day and said, “you know your music is supposed to follow something. It’s supposed to have a connected main message that you are trying to say.” And I was bewildered by what I was hearing because all my life I thought that musicians were just saying things that sounded cool.

I will say, that ever since I started this blog, my lyrics have sounded more accurate, more defined and more professional.

I actually struggled with lyrics for the longest time, however, I made it a commitment to get better at writing lyrics, and so I did.

Set goals and commitments

Setting goals will help you to see what it is that you need to work on.

I remember back when I first started this blog, I said to myself, it’s not a get rich quick scheme, but it could make me money in the future.

Know this, that anything good worth in life is going to take a long time to get. You have to be patient with yourself and actually give yourself a chance to do the things that you want to do.

I am giving myself a chance by working hard at this blog. I’m also not going to forget that God is the one who is helping me get through all of the hard times.

Which brings me to the next point.

Give yourself a chance

I remember once I was trying to finish college and my dad said, “German, I know that you can make it through college, but just give yourself a chance.” Get through college and get your degrees so that way you can have something to fall back on.

I absolutely want to get my college degrees but I know that it’s going to require a bit of myself.

I don’t care though, I hope that one day, God can help me to get my degrees.

Likewise with music. Give yourself a chance. Set yourself up for success and actually work hard at the things that you need to work at.

If you need to work at guitar, then work at guitar. If you need to work on your blog, then work on your blog, but give yourself a fighting chance and go for it.

Try and try some more

Never give up. Try your hardest to do the things that you want to do. If you don’t succeed, try again some other time and keep going until you have succeeded.

Make songs on a daily basis. I don’t care if you don’t finish the songs, but just practice the songwriting process and you will have gone far.
