Writing in a blog is a little different than writing in essays. It’s not more advanced, it’s just different.

There are certain techniques that you are supposed to use when writing a blog post. However, using things such as commas, periods, and grammar are still very much evident whilst blogging.

Today, I am going to teach you guys a few tips on what to do when writing a blog post in order to make a very successful blog, have great formatted blog content, and increase readership.

            Let’s get started.

Know how to use punctuation.

When writing in a blog post, you should at least know where and when to use exclamation, question marks, quotations, and also periods.

On the more advanced side, you should know how to use a comma.

The reason why I say that the more advanced side you should know how to use a comma is because even the professional writers out in the world, struggle with using the commas.

It’s really not that difficult to use it, it just requires some practice.

If you want to be challenged right now, I will teach you right now how to use a comma.

Let’s go over a few ways to use a comma:

  1. In an introductory clause. Ex. “When writing an introductory clause, the clause after that should be a complete sentence.” The introductory clause is at the beginning of the sentence and gives the rest of the sentence a kind of preface.
  2. Using it in place of a parentheses. Ex. “I saw that expensive car the other day, the Lamborghini, it was really cool.”
  3. Using it to list things Ex: “Did you see all of the guitars over there? They had Martins, Taylors, Gibsons, Fenders, Schecters, and much much more.”
  4. To sign off or end a sentence. Ex: “You have to write in your blog every day in order to increase readership, so do it.”
  5. Another time you can use a comma is this, anytime there needs a breath. Because a comma is supposed to take place where the reader can take a breath along with periods. Commas are meant to take breath’s in the middle of a sentence in a specific way. Try reading those last few sentences and take a breath wherever you see a comma and see if there is a difference in how you sound or the way the sentence forms.
  6. There are also a few other ways to use the comma, using a transition word or phrase. Ex: “ I like the Taylors, however, I also like the martin acoustic guitar” another example: “you can use a comma in a multitude of ways, after all, it was made to enhance our writing.” That “after all” is a transitional phrase.
  7. You can also use it at the beginning of a sentence with a transitional phrase. Ex: “ I like to go on long walks at the beach, reading blog posts, watching movies, and especially listening to music. However, I know how important it is to work.” The reason why you do that is because either the sentence is too big with a lot of commas and you want to make it look more professional or it doesn’t make any sense to add another comma there. That first sentence that I did right there, wouldn’t have made any sense if I put another comma right before the however because it looks messy and not formatted correctly.
  8. There are also different places where you can put the comma using the above methods that I just said. In certain instances, you don’t need to put a comma right before a transitional phrase. I always like to put a second comma right before a transitional phrase or word, but it’s not always necessary.
  9. Ex: “I like to put two commas right after and before the transitional word, however it’s not always necessary. The reason for that is because like I said, a comma is supposed to take place of a breath. So, sometimes you can continue a sentence without taking a breath, ergo no comma.

*** The reason why I put two commas in the transitional phrases is because when you put the commas and take that breath, it gives the following sentence more emphasis.

Try reading this sentence pausing each time you see a comma and pause really long in order to stress and know for yourself what I mean.

“I like guitars, however, I will always recommend piano as a starting instrument.”

Now try reading this sentence. This time it’s the same sentence but I take out the comma after however. You are supposed to read it with a pause in the comma and the rest of the sentence continuously.

“I like guitars, however I will always recommend piano as a starting instrument.” It sounds faster and gives it a tone of voice that is different than the comma after the however.”

I like to put the comma a lot but that’s because I know how to use them and it’s my writing style, however you don’t always have to put a comma right after the however and even sometimes I don’t put it right after the transitional phrase.”

Those are basically the main ways that you can use a comma. There are actually quite a few other ways that you can use them, however, these are the easiest ways that you can start using more of the comma.

***Keep in mind, that oftentimes the biggest mistake in a sentence is putting too much commas. It’s really easy to make run-on sentences using a comma because the tendency is to continue the sentence. However, the more you practice writing and editing your own blog posts, the easier it will become to just write a well-polished essay within an hour. Always remember that we need to break up our sentences a lot of times with a period or another exclamation point and that commas aren’t always the answer.***

I hope that I have inspired some people out there to start writing. I like being the writer that I am today. I think that I write really well. I know that my punctuation usage is on point because I used to write in another blog and the editor at one point quit marking my blog posts with editing mistakes.

She read them, but I just wasn’t making any mistakes. It felt really good.

If you want to go to heaven, then believe in Jesus and Jesus will get you into heaven.

Thank you all for listening in on this blog post. I hope that I have been an inspiration and a hope to you all. Please pray, read your bible, go to church, and love God above all else. Like, comment, share, subscribe, and I will see you all next time. German Gonzalez, signing out!
