If you’re a musician out there in the real world, you’ll oftentimes find that your craft won’t always pay the bills. However, that is not a reason to stop your music dream. One day, your craft can and will pay the bills to your wildest dreams. Oftentimes when we think about a musician, we think of an attractive person who knows how to play guitar and sing, well today, the modern Christian musician needs to know more than just the guitar and how to sing.

Let’s talk about all of the skills that every musician needs to have.

Singing skills

I know this sounds a little ironic after that first paragraph but hear me out!

Every musician needs to know how to sing. Singing is your own voice, singing is the real money maker in a band. Whoever knows how to sing is the one who rocks the show. It’s the spotlight of the show. It’s the person who does the interviews and guest appearances.

I know the people who have big egos are thinking to themselves, “man I’ve got to become a singer!” haha! It’s okay, I feel like I need the attention too.

But I think that every musician needs to be a singer. Actually, they recommend that every musician knows how to sing in college.

Why? Because it’s the one that’s going to make you the most money.

Guitar or piano

If you’re a modern contemporary artist or songwriter, you’re going to need a rhythmic element to sing your pieces to.

The guitar is so portable and contagious too. Everyone wants to know how to play the guitar because well… it’s a guitar!

Who doesn’t want to know how to play a guitar? Everyone who’s ever dreamt of becoming a musician has dreamed of playing the guitar.

            And the piano…

The piano has 8 octaves. The piano can be versatile and soulful. The piano has depth and width and can fill up a whole room.

Perfect for songwriting and perfect for doing bass lines, chords, melodies, and harmonies.

In college, there is even a proficiency exam for piano, if you want to get into the music program.

Mixing skills

You should at least know what a mixing engineer does. Mixing can take your song to a whole other level.

If you’re not going to mix it yourself, then have someone else mix it and still be a part of the mixing process. You need to know how a well-orchestrated mix sounds and looks like so that you can replicate it onto your own mix.

Skills pertinent to your own field

If you want to be an artist, you don’t necessarily have to write your own songs. And if you write songs, you don’t necessarily have to perform them. We are all working in this day and age to make something powerful and impactful to the lives of people.

We all can team up to do the things that we want to do so that we can succeed or at the bare minimum, pay the bills.

If you want to be a Songwriter, then practice songwriting, if you want to be an Artist, then gain influence among people and sing.

Go out and do the steps that are needed to do what you want to do in your career.

It’s impossible to learn Everything

So, it’s impossible to be a DJ, Songwriter, Producer, Mixing engineer, Mastering Engineer all in one go. Sure there are people who do those kind of things, but it’s far and rare in between. The best work happens in a team. So, get good at one thing and then try and focus on other elements just to get good at that one thing that you’re already good at.
