Of course with everything, it takes time to develop the skills that are necessary to do the things that you want and correctly too. I know that some of you are probably saying to yourselves that it is so difficult to be a writer in today’s day and age, however, it doesn’t have to be. If you have a passion for writing, fear not for there are a load of opportunities for everyone at every level.
With that being said, here are some skills that you need in order to become a modern Christian writer.
Writing skills
In a few previous blog posts, I have put up ways that you can start using the comma. I put several ways actually.
By starting to use the comma more effectively, you can make blog posts that are different in style and tone. I know that sounds like a challenge, but everything worthwhile is a challenge.
I assume that you already know how to read if you’re reading this blog post. However, in order to make excellent blog posts, you need to read a WHOLE LOT of blog posts.
Your reading skills are going to prove to be just as effective as your writing skills.
If you already know how to write sentences, then make more complex sentences because blogging is going to get complex from time to time.
Also, do your research on writing. I know that there is a thing called plain style writing and that is the most effective type of writing that we as bloggers can use, look it up!
As writers, we generally want to write for broad audiences with a diverse background in experience and knowledge, more often times the people that don’t know better are the ones looking at your blog. Plain style writing would be the most effective in this instance.
Researching skills
In order to make a really good blog post, there will be times (often too) where you will have to research the topic at hand.
Researching the things that you need for your blog post has to happen otherwise you have no basis to base your content off of.
I know that we think that we know something like the back of our hand. However, when we start researching the topic, we see that we missed a whole lot of words in between the mix. We often times end up with a different interpretation than what we originally thought after re-reading what we thought was right.
I’ll give you an example.
I often times know what the bible says. I know what it says because I’ve read it and I am 100 percent sure of what it is.
However, when I go back to the bible verse that I wanted to read, I see that it was the wrong bible verse! I actually needed a completely different bible verse. I miss quoted that bible verse. I’ve never done that on this blog because I’ve misquoted a lot of bible verses before and through experience I now check every bible verse before I write it.
Typing
This is kind of an obvious one. How else are you going to put your blog posts up on the internet? Are you going to hire someone to write them for you? Well that person is going to get paid and paid well before he starts working for you.
Typing isn’t a really difficult skill to pick up though. Find the letters ASDF and put your fingers consequently starting with your pinky on the A and your pointer finger on the F. Do the same for the characters JKL; and then just use the closest finger to that letter or character in order to type that letter or character. Sometimes you use different fingers, but you’ll figure that out along the way.
The way you get good at typing, is you guessed it, TYPING! So, you’re actually at a good spot to learn how to type. Because blogging requires a lot of typing and you need to put up lots of blog posts, so what better way to learn how to type than to just start typing?
The skills that are needed for your particular niche
If you’re a music blogger, obviously you need some mad skills in music. How can you teach or entertain people with music if you don’t know anything about it?
Likewise with any other subject. If you plan to write about Christianity from a Christian’s perspective, you better know the laws of the bible, how Jesus fulfilled the law and what all of that means for us. Those kind of things people are going to ask.
You are going to get tested on the things that you know, not only by your fans, but by the haters that are out in the world too. You have to be dedicated to the things that you love most because then you will be able to push through the awkwardness.
Communication skills
Blogging is an art in and of itself. Blogging can change lives. However, blogging is also a form of communication. You have to be able to communicate effectively if you want to become a blogger.
Imagine if someone couldn’t use grammar correctly? Then they couldn’t sound educated when it’s time to be educated.
There will be times in your blogging career where you will have to use jargon or lingo or even speak to professionals in your niche, how can they take you seriously when you’re using ain’t every other word?
