God is merciful, the thing is that we often times don’t hear of all the different ways that he has been merciful towards us and the world. God does love and God wants everyone in heaven.
With that being said, God is also perfect. That in itself means that there has to be consequences for the actions of people.
There has to be consequences and the consequences could be bad depending on what you’ve done.
Today, we will focus on why God is merciful and also how he is perfect in an imperfect world.
How is God merciful
Are you guys familiar with the story of Jonah? If you’re not familiar, then I will tell you the story of Jonah.
Jonah was a prophet. A prophet’s job is to spread what God is going to do to the world. However, he does it in a specific manner. A prophet kind of tells the future and it comes true because that future is from God.
So, Jonah was just hanging out doing his prophet things and one day God calls him to deliver a message to the Ninevites. There was a town called Nineveh and that town was known to be a wicked town.
Therefore, God said to Jonah, “Go to Nineveh and tell them that they better repent of their sins and follow Me or else I will judge them.”
And Jonah said No at first. Why? That answer will be revealed at the end of this story.
So anyways, Jonah set off to go to Nineveh, but at the turn that was supposed to take him to Nineveh, he instead went to the sea. Jonah went to the sea and decided that he would run away from his destiny.
So, Jonah went to the sea and he got on a boat and it sailed.
That night, there was a storm and the ship wrecked in the middle of the ocean and Jonah was swallowed up by a big fish. Then Jonah started to pray. He prayed to God and he said, “Lord my sins are grave, please let me out of this fish and I will go and tell Nineveh your message.”
So, Jonah spent three days in the belly of the fish and sure enough on the third day, Jonah was spat up on a beach by the fish. Jonah was spat up on the beach and he went and listened to God.
Then Jonah went to Nineveh and he said in a very angry tone of voice. “If you don’t follow God, then God will judge you.”
Immediately, the people of Nineveh started to repent of their sins and follow God.
NOW, here is why Jonah didn’t go to Nineveh. Jonah knew how forgiving God is. Jonah knew how merciful God is. Jonah didn’t want to go to Nineveh not because he was scared of Nineveh, but because he felt that Nineveh didn’t deserve mercy.
However, God thought that it was right that the Ninevites should be shown mercy.
God and Judgement
Having said that, God doesn’t let anyone just walk through life without consequences to their actions.
God does have consequences both earthly and physical to everyone.
God is a righteous judge and therefore, he must carry out sentences when it is appropriate.
