So, I don’t know if you’ve noticed a pattern here. However, I am doing a few series based on the teachings of pastor Jeffress. I am doing a few posts based on the teachings of Pastor Jeffress.
They’re not HIS teachings per se. They are just teachings that the bible has said all along and Pastor Jeffress is just a way to communicate the message.
Today, we will be talking about Contentment and what it means to us Christians.
At this time I would like all of us to enter into a moment of silence. Take a minimum of 5 minutes to pray for all of the things in your life.
Now back to the show
Contentment
What is contentment?
Contentment is the act of being satisfied with what you have and not desiring anything else. Contentment means that you are expecting God to give you the pay raise when the time is right.
Contentment means that you are not materialistic.
Contentment means that you don’t look for the next game console that’s out there or the hottest cars that are out. Contentment means that you have what you need and you are fine with it.
Materialism
Materialism is when money, cars, houses, luxuries, etc. all consume who you are.
You live for the materials that are in your possession and if you don’t have it, your ambition will drive you to go and get it.
In the simplest form, Materialism is bad.
It drives us to covet and that is a sin. Coveting is bad because that is not loving our neighbors. That is envying our neighbors.
But what about needing more?
It’s different to need something more than it is to want something more. Say for example this, you are driving your Toyota. It’s a nice car. I like Toyotas personally.
They are good, reliable cars that need little maintenance.
Materialism would drive (no pun intended) you insane if you don’t have the next bigger car, like that Mustang.
That Mustang, as cool as it sounds, isn’t going to do you any good. I’m not bashing on Ford here, but I’ve heard that Mustangs break down SO EASILY. Sure enough, they are great performance cars, but that’s it, performance cars.
You just want a car that looks cool and will get the girls.
However, after you got the job promotion that’s going to pay for that Mustang, next you’re looking at the next level car, that Mercedes or BMW.
And it goes on and on until you’ve reached Lamborghini level.
That’s materialism at work.
Contentment will make you happy
It goes without say, but humans are very insatiable creatures. We crave bigger, better, cooler, stronger, hipper, faster, taller things all the time.
However, It’s not the way to live. God gave us all blessings and we should be happy with those blessings. It’s not good to crave after all the things in the world because then we would be bouncing back and forth between options all the time.
Also, Contentment will satisfy you.
Let me share with you a personal story.
Growing up, I had always been tall.
I am currently 6 ft, some people think I’m 6 ft 2 inches, but that’s a different discussion.
And people have made a lot of comments on my height. I have heard people praising my
height. They say things like, “Man I wish I was tall as you.” or how about, “Hey there look out for the giant!” or my favorite, “Could they make you any taller?” I get things like that all the time. My previous boss said that I was “a force to be reckoned with.”
But I have heard bad things about my height too. I have heard things like, “Oh you’ll never be as strong as that guy.” (When comparing me to someone taller.), “You’re not tall enough for that. Believe it or not, i’ve heard people tell me, you’re not tall enough for that.” or my favorite, “I don’t like your height, I prefer to be short.”
You know, I see now that there are a lot of people who wish that they could and could NOT be me. So one day, I was in gym class and I got some of those comments. People commenting on my height.
And in the end I just said, “I’m happy with my height.”
So, I feel like Contentment is just being happy. Sure there are bigger and badder things out there, but being happy with what you have, is all that really matters.
In the end, your body can’t save you from hell. Your decisions do that. And in the end, God provides Wives, Husbands, cars, houses, children, knowledge, wisdom, resources, love, security, to all of those who ask him for it. And it doesn’t matter how big or tall you are. God loves all of us the same.
