Yes and no, Music classes have their place in the music world and can offer very valuable insight and knowledge. Plus have you ever heard of the saying that the student is not greater than the teacher? Well if the teacher is yourself, how are you supposed to be a great musician if all you’re doing is teaching yourself?
However, there have been people who taught themselves how to sing and play the guitar.
And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Before we go any further, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this point in time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in our lives. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for you to become a better musician.
Now back to the show
Music classes
Music classes are great and can make you a great musician. Me personally when I first started to learn how to play the guitar, I taught myself through books and I tried to get far, however, sometimes it’s really needed for someone to dumb it down for you.
Why?
Because you don’t know anything about music so you probably won’t understand terms or things that would be complex.
I remember the first thing that I got stuck on was the term “up beat.”
That is such a basic term in music but I didn’t understand it because I just wasn’t a musician yet.
And I had to ask my first guitar teacher what the term “up beat” meant because she had to explain it to me.
I also didn’t understand the concept of tapping your foot to the beat. Those kind of things are just not natural.
What if you can’t afford lessons
I couldn’t afford lessons back when I first started to play the guitar, however, I started to pray to God to help me to get lessons and sure enough,
That year, the guitar programs opened up at my middle school and high school.
So like I’m not sure what to tell you, because guitar is an awesome instrument, singing is an awesome thing, and being a musician is so cool, you just have to pray to God about it.
And there are a ton of music teachers on the internet that do it really cheap.
I mean not really cheap but they do it at an affordable rate.
25 Dollars every half an hour is great. If you do one lesson a week, that’s 100 dollars a month. I mean that could be a lot to some of you but if you really want lessons go ahead and look them up.
But I mean that’s not all, with the internet at our fingertips, it can provide you with information that is vast and great.
Information on guitar, singing, music theory, music career, production, mixing, mastering, etc. etc. It takes time to learn it all but learning something from scratch has never been easier with the help of the internet.
Also, if it was me who had to do it all over again, I would first try and practice and learn with the internet and then see if I can afford lessons.
Why? Because if you can’t learn from the internet, you won’t learn from anyone.
It’s a harsh truth. I know you might want the big guns right off the bat, but be humble.
You have no idea how many times I hear of people tell me, “I want to learn how to play the guitar.” and then I go ahead and tell them that I’ll teach them for free and then they deny it!
Why? I’m not sure, they could think that I don’t know anything about guitar, they could think that I’m not qualified to teach them. They could think a million things. But if you really want to learn an instrument, then you’ll do anything to learn anything. Seriously.
And guess what? Those same people who wanted to learn how to play guitar, they try and learn a little bit, but then get discouraged and quit!
And it happens all the time. So, be humble, quit saying that you’re going to be the best guitarist in the world. First start off by saying that you’ll be the best guitar student in your area. It all takes time in order to be a professional in anything. So be patient with yourself.
