Hey guys, so today I wanted to teach you guys how to write lyrics.

Believe it or not, it’s not just about finding something that sounds good. There is a certain path that you have to take in order to write great lyrics.

Before we get into any of that, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in your lives. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for all of the things in your lives.

Now back to the show

Basics of writing lyrics

So, writing lyrics is similar to other forms of writing. Sometimes you have to tell a story and other times you have to describe a situation. Sometimes you’re writing poetry and other times you’re telling something.

Either way, there are some great ways that you can become a better songwriter by doing a few good practices.

Here are some things that you can do to better your lyrics.

Practice writing poetry

What happens is that poetry has a lot of the same elements that songs have.

They both have rhythm, rhyme, metaphors, similes, alliteration, allegory, imagery. Etc. etc. and there are a million ways that you can write a poem using different writing schemes and rhyme patterns.

So say for example me, If I want to become a great songwriter, I should practice writing lyrics that my genre calls for.

I am a Christian songwriter, so naturally the words in my mouth are light, fire, strength, wisdom, battle, hope, courage, etc. etc. those are all words that can describe what I am.

It can also be used to describe the things that are important in my life.

I actually didn’t start to pick this up until just recently but it has transformed my lyrics all over.

There are no shortcuts that you can take in order to write great lyrics, but….

There are a few things that some people would say helps to write great songs. Poetic devices and literary devices are one of them.

But the main practice that people say will help you to write better lyrics is that you wake up and before you make your cup of joe, you get to practicing writing lyrics.

Why? Because your mind is more fresh in the mornings and can spit out better lyrics than when someone else is talking to you in your ear or after you’ve finished writing your blog post, it’s just more difficult.

That’s what’s said in a few books that I’ve read about lyric writing.

Some song tips for when you’re actually writing your songs

When you’re writing a song, you need to be able to let the lyrics sing.

What do I mean by that? I mean that you need to let your lyrics and melody and chords all match each other in order to give off a certain mood.

You can convey the emotion of inspiration, nostalgia, sadness, happiness, contentment, etc. etc. but you have to write the lyrics, melody, chords, and tempo appropriately.
