I know what you guys are thinking, German, it’s downright torture having to write the same things over and over again for new songs.
I UNDERSTAND!!!
Therefore, here are some things that you can do in order to spice up your songwriting life.
First our moment of silence
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in our lives. Pray to God to help us to become the best possible songwriters that we were destined to become. Pray that God’s will be done in our lives. Take a minimum of 5 minutes to pray.
Now back to the show
- Change the structure of the song – The song structure can greatly change the way that a song is supposed to sound. I remember when I first heard the song, “Hey Jude” by the Beatles, I was transformed into figuring out how they did that. It’s actually really simple and it’s a change of song structure that really made the song sound unique. There are a wide variety of song structures and you can customize each song depending on what you want! There’s Verse-Chorus, Verse bridge-verse-bridge-chorus, there’s Chorus-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus, I mean, there are so many ways that you could flip that. And that’s not all. You still are forgetting about things such as intro, solo, pre-chorus, and outro.
- Change the entire part of what you usually do- Say for example an intro, there are two main types of intros in modern music. A regular intro and a deceptive intro. I bet you didn’t know what a deceptive intro was right? A deceptive intro is an intro that is completely different than the rest of the song. If you ever listen to the intro of “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath, then you’ve heard a deceptive intro. But you can change almost any part of a song in order to sound more unique. Say for example a Chorus, you can have an instrumental chorus or a voice chorus. A voice chorus is when you sing the chorus, but an instrumental chorus is when an instrument takes over the chorus part. Say for example Closer by the chainsmokers has an instrumental chorus.
- Change instruments- You can’t believe how different a song sounds when you play it on the guitar compared to a piano. It can sound more soulful to play it on the guitar, it can also sound more soulful to play it on the piano. For this reason, musicians often need to be multi-talented.
- Change musical styles- If you write happy songs all the time, try and write emotional and sad songs for a bit. It will develop your musicianship A LOT. Vice versa too! If you write sad songs all the time, then write a few happy songs. What happens is that in order to be a successful songwriter, you need to have written both happy and sad songs and be good at both of them. Why? Because sometimes the crowd calls for an emotional song and sometimes a crowd calls for an energetic, get-pump song.
- Change lyrics- If you write words with imagery, try writing with words that use Allegory. Try using different poetic and literary devices. It will make your words more deep and portray a picture that breaths in the music. Use metaphors and similes and assonance and consonance.
