How to be a serious songwriter?

It’s one thing to write songs for fun, it’s a completely different thing to write songs for a career. 

I mean in a way it’s similar because you are writing songs for your own entertainment. However, it’s different because now in a way, you are trying to please people. 

And pleasing people doesn’t necessarily have to mean that you “sell out”. However, pleasing people means that you’re going to have to do things that you might not agree with. 

An example would be that you’re going to have to make great hits, and let’s be honest, usually great hits are simple and sweet. 

So, you’re going to have to write simple things and make them sound professional. 

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in our lives. Pray to God to help us to become the best songwriter that we can possibly be. Pray to God to reveal what is his will for our lives.

Taking your songwriting more seriously

So the first step in taking songwriting seriously is becoming a good musician first. 

Obviously you can’t perform music unless you have already practiced music for hours on end before you hit the stage. 

Obviously you can’t songwrite unless you have already practiced songwriting for a long time. 

So one of the prime things that you need to do in order to get good at songwriting is to actually write songs. 

I know this sounds cliche, but how seriously do you take songwriting? How far do you want to go in songwriting? Do you want to be a bedroom musician forever? Or do you want to play gigs and get paid for it too? 

I know for sure that I want to do excellent in music and I’m willing to put in the work in order to get there, but it all takes time and I know it. 

You gotta pray about it

I know, I know, some of you are saying, “German, you see all of those pop singers and how non christian they are, why should I pray about it?” 

So I believe that God can call us to be musicians, but we have to use it for him. God does not provide vain things. And whenever someone starts music in the hope of getting girls, money, fame, and fortune, that’s a vain reason for wanting to start music. 

And if you do, do that, you won’t be happy. 

It’s actually pretty simple, if you do anything without God, it’s in vanity and if you do music without God, it’s vain. 

So seek God to help you to become the best possible musician that there is and he will help you.
