Hey everyone! Today I’ll be giving some tips on how to be a Christian musician. Keep in mind that I’ve been a Christian musician for a few years now and I know a thing or two about being successful in the Christian musician world.

But before we get into any of that, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to have our moment of silence. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray that God may help us to become the best possible musicians that we were destined to become.

Now back to the show

Make sure you know what you’re doing.

I often hear of how people try and be recording artists in their local scene and they don’t really know how to do different things for their music.

I will hear things a whole bunch of different things: “What is music theory?”, “how do you write lyrics?”, “What is a key?”, etc. etc.

And like, I just want to ask you something, How were you planning on making the advanced music that you hear on the radio or on your playlists?

Did you think that it’s just a bunch of random notes being played so that it can sound cool?

Well I’m here to tell you that it’s not true!

People actually do follow a particular key signature and meter.

There are actually chords that fit diatonically within the key in order to sound good.

I’m not trying to bag on one of my friends here but, I remember clearly that he said that he harmonizes tri-tones in his music.

Like what? Haha. don’t get me wrong, he still writes great music, but I mean that’s just a lot of dissonance that is being produced and that might not sound too good. And he was playing local gigs ever since we were in high school.

So like, know what you’re doing.

Start as early as possible

You know what they say is the best time to start something right? NOW!! Haha yes now is the best time to start something.

I didn’t get certified in social media management until I was 24 and it was at that age that I started this blog.

That was two years ago and finally I’m starting to see some results from my blogging efforts.

I mean not the insane amount of results that I want to see, but definitely some results that are a good indicator that my blog is actually working for me.

I perfectly could’ve started a YouTube channel for my music, and I think it would’ve been better, but I decided to start a blog because I thought at the time that it would be easier for me to start a blog.

Just so you know, I had already been playing a few instruments and singing for a few years before I started this blog.

So like, start as early as possible. Don’t think that you’re too old to start something either.

I remember I saw that Slash, the lead guitarist for Guns N’ Roses, started playing guitar when he was 15 years old.

I had a friend who was 17 at the time and he was learning how to play the guitar. I had already been playing guitar for 6 years and he was asking me questions on how to do things on the guitar.

And then he said, “I think I’m too old to learn how to play the guitar.” Then I told him, “You’re not too old, everyone starts somewhere.” and then he said, “but I’m too old to get signed to a record label.” and I said, “I’m not stopping and you don’t see me mad at the fact that at this age, I don’t have a grammy.”

Nah, I’m going to keep fighting the dream that I knew I was supposed to become.

And you know what, regardless of age, I don’t care if you’re 40, God could call you to become a musician.

God can call you to become a musician and he doesn’t look at your age or anything like that. God can call you to do anything.

Stick to one or two things at first and then move forward.

If it were me again, I would do the same thing that I did back when I first started to learn how to play the guitar. I would learn the guitar and sing at the same time and then pick up the piano.

Why? Because those things are kind of essential for a songwriter in certain genres.

I mean, I know that hip-hop might not call for someone to play the guitar, that’s usually a processed guitar sampled by someone else.

But even still, hip-hop can call for guitar at times.

I mean I’m a Christian musician so I don’t want to go into detail, but just know that guitar can be used anywhere.

Stay persistent

Everything good in life takes time and persistence. You have to persevere through the difficult times. You have to fight through the rough times.

I know that, that sounds kind of hard to do, but music was never easy.

There were many times where I said to myself, I will never do this.

Why? Because the music was just too darn difficult. And with other things in life too, you’re going to have to stay persistent.

Like you’re going to have to stay persistent in your blog or YouTube Channel. You’re going to have to stay persistent in your music career because there will be highs and lows.

And of course you’re going to have to stay persistent in all challenges in life.

Write as many songs as possible

When you’re a musician, you’re going to have to write songs. You’re going to have to write A LOT of songs.

I know that might sound kind of tedious and to you it might sound unnecessary because you’re an artist and you don’t want to write songs.

However, no artist got to those big stages without having to write a few tunes by themselves.

Everyone started out playing local shows and gaining support from the audience by performing original written pieces of work.
