Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to be sharing with you all how my songwriting process has changed from the beginning of my music career until now.
Before we get into all of that, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray for all of the things in our lives. Take 5 minutes and pray to God to help us to become the best songwriters that we were destined to become.
Now back to the show
How my songwriting process has changed
You know it’s funny, when I first started to write songs, I thought that I was just supposed to tell a story with my music. I could “tell” the story and it would work out great because people would understand what I was trying to say.
The problem is that there is a certain way that you’re supposed to tell that story.
You’re not supposed to “tell” it per se. But rather, you’re supposed to paint the picture as to how the story happened.
You’re not supposed to use telling words all the time, you’re supposed to paint the picture of it most of the way through.
I’ll be honest, when I first started to write this blog, I thought that you were just supposed to tell the story. I didn’t know that you were supposed to paint the picture.
However now my lyrics and songwriting process has changed.
Based off of a few things which are…
Poems
I didn’t know that lyric writing could be compared to poem writing. Actually the first bit of advice that I ever received was that song writing is nothing like poetic writing. In poetic writing it focuses on certain elements and in songwriting it focuses more on different elements.
However my sister, who is a music teacher, told me that when you first start to write lyrics, you need to compare them to poem writing.
Why? Because poem writing will help you to make lyrics that are describable and have power behind them. It will make your lyrics sing and dance on their own.
I didn’t want to listen to this bit of advice at first, but then I started to see that what she was saying was absolutely true.
So, I started to integrate poem writing into my very own bit of songwriting and sure enough, it worked out just fine.
Not only that, but I started to get really positive feedback from people in the audience. I started to get people who really liked my music.
They were cheering for me, and clapping for me, and it was a great feeling!
I’ll be honest, my first few times writing songs and performing them didn’t go too well.
As a matter of fact, no one clapped. And it stunk because I was trying my very best to do what I’ve been taught! And it hurt my ego! A lot!
But anyways, it was a learning experience and now I’ve learned the hard way on how to do this.
My music
I’m keeping it ridiculously simple. I know that there are people out there who will wonder, “But there are so many more chords that you could pick from, “Why would you stick with those four chords?”
Well I’ll tell you why, those ridiculous chords that you think I should play, doesn’t sound too good with my song!
I make Christian pop music. And If I wanted to, I could make Christian rap, and Christian rock. It really wouldn’t be too hard for me.
But all of those genres mean that I write simple things. Simple bass lines, guitar parts, piano parts, and drums.
The point is to make the crowd feel and get them singing along. That’s my goal anyways.
I know that I’m not a full fledged producer, but I got some producing knowledge in me.
So take my advice or leave it, either way, the crowd likes simple things.
My work ethic
Ultimately, writing great songs depends on how hard you want to work at your craft. It doesn’t depend on your talent, or inspiration, or anything like that.
I remember I one time heard from a famous musician, “songwriting is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” And looking back now, I see that, that is a completely accurate statement. I mean sure you could say that inspiration is a big factor in writing songs, but it takes work to actually write a song. That’s the bottom line in songwriting.
You are as good a songwriter as you are a worker.
