Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to go over why every musician should write in every genre.
Before we get into this, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the best possible musician that we are supposed to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for these things
Now back to the show
Why every Genre?
Music is interconnected. From Metal to hip-hop, from R&B to Pop, Music is all connected to each other. Therefore, it only makes sense that a musician shouldn’t be tied to just one genre.
I mean I guess someone could argue that there is no way that hip-hop and metal are all related, but then again, have you seen what metal musicians do in their songs?
If you don’t already know, they have an instrumental in the background and the vocals singing their parts.
Of course there is one main theme or element in the song that gets highlighted the most and obviously that’s the chorus.
Take a look at some of the most popular metal songs that there are in the world and you’ll find that, that’s the truth.
But anyways, we’re not here to talk about metal or hip-hop, we’re here to talk about the genres and why every Christian musician needs to experiment in some, if not all, of the genres that they can think of.
Let’s go over a few of the genres and go over why they are absolutely needed in every musicians projects.
hip-hop/ Rap
Rap is the granddaddy of all genres. It’s what we all started to do when we as a human race started to make music. We just created poems and sang them over a chord progression.
Sometimes they rhymed, and other times they were just very culturally rich.
I feel like rap has taken a bad image in today’s society because of all the cursing and improper images that rap portrays in society.
I mean rap usually has to do with gangsters and criminality right?
Well that wasn’t the real first rap.
If you go back in time to history, rhyming and poetry along with rhythm, were things for the literate. They were things only for the culturally sound. They were things only for the people who wanted to express their love for God. Literally, The king David wrote poems to show how much he loved God. and he played an instrument!
He would write these poems and sing them over him playing an instrument. That’s rap! How could we not as humans revert back to our original form of music and rap about God?
Anyways, Rap is the original music genre. Therefore, we should show our love towards God by writing raps about him
Rock
Rap and Rock go hand in hand. Rap and rock go together like two peas and a can. Rock is just taking rap and using different instruments. But they use the same elements really heavily.
Rhythm and poetry coincide quite heavily in rock. And it doesn’t have to rhyme, but rather, it can just portray images and show off lyrics that evoke emotion.
I’ve always been a fan of rock music. But I’ve always been a fan of rap too.
So like, I hate when those conversations of who is better rap or rock emerge. Because not one genre is better than the other and both genres use elements from each other.
Rap uses rock elements with the distorted guitars and drums, and Rock uses elements of rap by using a voice that’s rhyming overdubbed on top of a musical background.
Country
Country has those soft acoustics that everyone loves to hear because it makes the crowd feel in their feelings.
But country can turn into rock or rap in a minute.
I have officially started to like some country. Not a completely big fan as of yet. However, I know that if I were to ever listen to a lot of country, then I would like it.
I’ve said it before, there is a saying that goes around in the music industry. “The person that doesn’t like your music, never listens to it!”
Therefore, we need to experiment with our country folk’s genre because ultimately, it’s just another sister in the world of music.
