Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to go over which is better for lyrics, inspiration or perspiration?

Before we get into that, Let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the people that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for these things.

Now back to the show

Inspiration or perspiration? It’s really 10% inspiration

Yeah in reality, it’s 10% inspiration. I more so call it blessing than inspiration because God is the one that gives the good ideas to us when we need that last 10% to get us moving again.

Don’t get me wrong, inspiration comes and has it’s part in writing songs. Some great songs out there were written on whim.

Inspiration gives us the ideas to talk about certain topics. Inspiration gives us the name of our songs and our children.

But in order for us to get great inspiration, we must read a lot and be submersed in the word of God constantly, especially as Christian musicians.

The downside is that you can’t live your whole life waiting for ideas to come to you just so you can write them down on paper and call it a day.

Sure you might write a good song out of inspiration, but where is the rest of your album going to come from?

That’s where perspiration comes from

Perspiration, the 90% no one talks about

So in reality, songwriting is a whole bunch of work. Actually writing a song that sounds good takes time and dedication and it takes even more time to learn how to write great songs.

I mean in reality, it’s a formula that’s been proven and tested by time itself, but the art comes from where you find differences and varietes in the way that you deliver or even shape that song.

I mean I could think off the top of my head 10 songs that use a I-IV-vi-V chord progression, however, they change each one because each one has their own personalities. Everyone is different so put your own spin and taste to each song that you write.

And ultimately you have to follow a formula for when you first start writing songs but as you get more advanced, you will make better songs.

But put your own art into each song and you will be making songs that everyone will want!

Perspiration is actually where most of my songs come from and as a matter of fact, they sound so GOOD!!!

The harder you work at something, the better you will get at it, trust in that fact!

Why do you need to take the same approach?

Every songwriter does the same thing. Every songwriter that actually takes this as a profession does the same thing anyways.

It’s because you can’t just go through your life and say all of a sudden that you want to work and then get to work, it doesn’t work that way!

You have to be constantly on the grind!

And if you ever get into a songwriting room with a few other artists or songwriters, they will want you to produce right there on the spot. And they will want big lyrics, ones that move people, ones that change the audience’s whole look on life. That’s how good of a songwriter you need to be in order to get into those songwriting rooms.

And you can’t get in those songwriting rooms unless you have written big lyrics already.

You need to prove yourself first as a songwriter in order to make it in those rooms.

How to get better faster?

The only way to get better at something is by doing it.

With that being said, there are some practices that you could do that would better your songwriting.

The first step would be to write as if you are writing poetry. I actually got that from my little sister.

However in a song, there are certain elements where you might use imagery and other instances where you use descriptive language.

Like say for example in a chorus, you are supposed to use descriptive language, in the verse, especially at the beginning of the verse and at the end you are supposed to use descriptive language. And in between all that, you are supposed to use imagery. It’s just a way of songwriting.

You could also learn from your favorite songs and try and mimic the things that they do. Try and take some of their strongest hooks and implement them in your music, or take some of their lyrics and see what kind of spin you can put on it to make it yours.

Overall, you’re not supposed to copyright infringe upon anyone’s song, but as practice, it’s okay to steal things here and there, and eventually practice becomes your own and you are able to make songs that are unique and have your own type of flavor. Just remember that practice is the number one thing that musicians need in life, apart from God.
