Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how to prepare for a songwriting session or competition.
Before we get into it, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the best songwriters possible. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for these things.
Now back to the show
How to prepare for a songwriting session
So when I say songwriting session, I mean a session where you are paid to write songs.
You have already done your due diligence and have already proven to the world that you can write great songs. Now, you’re doing it for a living.
So in order to prepare for a songwriting session there are a few things that you need to have done, it’s part of that due diligence. Let’s talk about them.
- You need to have written hundreds of songs. Practice makes perfect. So you really need to practice songwriting any chance that you can get in order to really get into any songwriting rooms. Right now, I probably have around 80 finished and unfinished songs just on my phone alone. However, my other phone broke and in that phone I had countless other songs written in my notes. And ultimately, all of that practice is going to show when I get into those rooms.
- You need to have sold albums first. When you are trying to get into those songwriting rooms, people will want to see that your music can sell. Don’t get me wrong, I know that your music sounds good to you, but does it sound good to the masses? And not only that, but people are going to want to see that you can sell in a small area first. The rule of thumb is that if you can sell in a smaller area, then you can sell in a large area. So try and sell out a few shows in your city or area first before you move on to the big boys.
- You need to have a website to showcase your best talents. People need to find you on the internet in order to sign you right? Along with that website, you need to have started a blog to showcase your personality and your beliefs. People are going to want to see what you stand for because there are masses of people that buy from artists based on their beliefs. So your personality has to be in the right place too!
How to prepare for a songwriting competition?
So on top of the fact that you need to have practiced a whole lot of songwriting, you need to have done a few other things too. Let’s talk about these things.
- You need to have recorded a demo. Your demo is your demonstration of your music. Your demo showcases your talents in music. I would say that you need to record an album of your best music first before you go and record for your competition. The reason is that if you win the competition, people will want to see more work that you’ve done. And you need to have done sufficient work to show people more.
- You need to have passed through the struggle first before you move on to the success story. We all have humble beginnings. We need to have started from somewhere. The thing is that we all need to have started small because it will teach us humility. It will teach us patience and hardwork. It will teach us that even though we have good things now, it was because God was the one who gave it to us.
- You need to have co-written with other people first. So like you need to have co-written with other people first because if you succeed, there’s actually a personal factor that goes into moving forward with your career. The thing is that if you are a really cool person to be around you will actually get more songwriting opportunities based off of the fact that you are a cool person to be with.
And a whole lot of God
You don’t know what the judges or people who are in charge of your career will be thinking at the time. So you need to have spent some time in prayer and with God in order to really help yourself out.
There are actually a whole lot of factors that are outside of your control that a whole bunch of industry professionals are going to want to see first before they can sign you to anything. Things such as age, height, weight, looks, personality, might influence what people think about you.
But then again, I have seen people from all shapes and sizes get record deals, so don’t count yourself out yet because you never know what God has planned for you.
