Music business plan/Music business tips

Music is a business in and of itself. I know a lot of you probably do music because you think it’s fun, but some of us take it as a full time job. 

Before we get into this topic, let’s have our moment of silence. 

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the musicians that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray to God for these things. 

Now back to the show

How music is like a business.

I one time was reading a book about music and music business. 

And I was reading in the book that treating your music career is like a business. You have a lot of similar elements from the beginning. 

And I was reading all of the things that was needed to start a successful business. 

And I kept reading to find out that a music career is a lot like being an entrepreneur. 

So for this blog post. I’m going to be talking like business and the terms businessman and musician might be used interchangeably.

So let’s get started. 

Business plan

So every good business needs a business plan. You have to find a way that you can systematically sell your products or services to people in a way that is cost efficient and fast. 

So this business plan needs a few things. 

1. It needs your product or service
2. It needs a way that you can get your product or service out to people
3. Marketing
4. A plan for the future

I mean I guess that you could have a few other things too but I’m just sticking to the main ones. There are things like a SWOT analysis that would be helpful to some people. There are other things too like surveys and insight on your demographics that you want to sell to that would prove helpful. 

However, I’m trying to get your project moving as fast as possible.

Therefore, Let’s just stick to the four top subjects and talk about them for a little bit. 

1.your product or service. I know that a lot of us are musicians and we are aiming for the big dogs. However, not all of us want to be a multi-million dollar recording artist. Some of us want to just make a living with our music. Others want to offer their musical talents to other artists and songwriters to help out other people. I mean there’s a whole bunch of things that you can do and you can talk about different things depending on what you want to do. There are things such as session work, songwriting, management, producing, mixing, mastering, marketing, law, record label exec, A&R, website design, blogger, etc. etc. there are literally a million things that you could do in the music industry and each one of those things needs to be talked about differently so you can target the right audience.  

2.You need to have a way to get your work in front of other people. Ultimately, it comes down to working with people who are professional and cool to hang out with. There are a ton of ways that you can get your foot in the door to a record label. You just need to work hard at it. 

3.Marketing This ties in to having your work in front of people. Although it requires more time and effort to do so. Marketing is the process in working towards getting new “customers” or fans for musician terms. Marketing can take the form of many different types of ways that you can market your products or services to people. But ultimately it boils down to content creation for us starving artists. There are people who say that you can advertise your music to the right audience and build your following that way, but honestly that’s expensive. The way that we as starving artists are supposed to get fans is by content creation. We need to be creating content on our platforms to create a following of dedicated fans. This is one reason why I write in my blog. Because I want more fans! Haha! But I also enjoy writing in a blog. It’s a lot of fun.

4.A plan for the future. This plan for the future doesn’t have to be extensive. It could be a place where you want to be a year from now. Or it could be a thing that you want to do 6 months from now. It doesn’t matter. Either way, if you want something that bad, you’re going to have to go out there and chase it. In this plan for the future, talk about the goals that you have for yourself. Talk about the life you wish to have. It will give you strength to continue doing the things that you want to do.
