Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to be sharing with you all some music wisdom that I’ve learned throughout the years.

Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to  become the people that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for these things.

Now back to the show

How to make drum patterns

So there are a few key elements that you should be aware of when making drum patterns.

  1. It’s a pattern
  2. It’s nothing but rhythm
  3. It’s not keeping the beat although it can do that a lot of times
  4. Try and keep it simple

So let’s go over these elements and I’ll show you how to set it up

  1. It’s a pattern. When making drum beats, it’s important to understand that most popular music is going to be repetitive. Most pop, hip-hop, rock, and country songs are all doing practically the same thing: Bass on 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4 while the hi-hats are playing natural eighth notes. But of course you don’t have to follow said pattern, you can change it up. And make it sound really cool and dynamic. There are a million ways that you can make a drum beat, but it  all revolves around making it into a pattern. If you do something, repeat a few bars after that. If you have a four bar pattern repeat it again another four bars,
  2. It’s nothing but rhythm. If you get really technical, you could change the pitch of a hi-hat or a snare’s sound, but that’s going beyond the scope of this argument. What I’m trying to say is that rhythm is the foremost product of drums. You have to have a dynamic rhythm in order to create drum beats. Spend some time learning the guitar or piano in order to get a good sense of rhythm. Because everyone knows that a piano will come in handy when producing music. Trust me it will.
  3. It’s not keeping the beat, although it will do that a lot of times. Take a look at any song that there is. The drum will almost always be in a constant pattern. Except of course for when you’re doing fills and solos. And that beat will almost always be on the two and four. That in itself is telling you where the beat of the song is. But that shouldn’t be the only indicator of where the song is. You should know where the on or off beat is even without the drums or instruments playing. You should be able to keep beat in a song regardless of those factors. Because there will be instances where you will have to come in at a time and the only thing that is telling you when to come in is the beat and not the drums.
  4. Try and keep it simple. Simplicity is key in all music. Of course there is such a thing as being too simple, but keep it simple and try and not make a 120 bpm song that has nothing but solos. Even though technically that can work, it’s not something advisable.

Alright now that we have a few examples, let’s make a drum pattern and let me see if I can explain to you how you can make your own drum patterns that sound exciting.

Say this:

Bum Bum TSCH  Bum Bum TSCH

The bums  are the bass and the TSCH are the snares.

Now do this

Bum TSCH Bum TSCH

It’s different right? But that’s only using two different instruments?

Now do this:

Bum  (pause) Bum TSCH Bum Bum TSCH

It’s different and all I did was add a pause?

Now do this:

TS ts ts ts ts ts ts ts ts

Imagine that the Ts are the hi-hats

Just using these instruments alone and different manners of pauses, you can create different patterns all day long that sound exciting

I mean I just made those patterns up and they sounded so good to me. I mean I didn’t make then up, I’m pretty sure someone out there already made them up, but it’s just something that’s so engraved in me that it just came out naturally.

So by using pauses, you can make different rhythms and beats for your music.

Try and keep it simple at first, because if you don’t know anything about music, it mighty be a little difficult for you  to understand the concepts of “Playing on the off beat” or “16th notes” or even “syncopation”

Keep practicing and it will all work out

Hey guys! here is a blog post that I know will help you guys out with other music theory so you can combine your drum skills with other melodic and harmonic music.
