Hey guys! So today, I’m going to be sharing with you all, my favorite part in songwriting.
Before we get into that, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become better people. Take a minimum of minutes and pray for these things.
Now back to the show
My favorite part in writing a song
I honestly love writing the chorus the most. It’s just a long, strong, piece of musical phrase and it just sounds so good when played with the chords that you were using.
The verses are hard to come up with because it involves a little bit of poetry. The verses have to be original and creative in the delivery and flow of the lyrics. It really isn’t easy.
The Chords are a little bit too easy.
I know music theory very well and I know the guitar extremely well, so it’s not really hard for me to make up chords.
As a matter of fact, I get bored writing chord progressions.
If you know anything about music theory, you’ll know that Chord progressions should repeat and A LOT TOO!
You’ll know that once you have the main four chords of a song put together, you literally have to keep it like that for the rest of the song, until maybe the pre-chorus or the bridge. Sometimes even the chorus has different chords or chord progressions but that’s for a different time.
In a lot of pop music, you’ll find that the chords in the verse are the same as the chords in the chorus.
The melody is another part that is super easy to write.
I know I sound really cocky, but for melodies, you usually keep it between one, two, or three note hooks in the verses and then solid three note hooks in the chorus.
It doesn’t exactly have to be that way, but that’s the formula for a major hit.
The chorus
The chorus is a healthy mix of challenging and unchallenging at the same time. You have to come up with lyrics that sum up the verses, but that’s the thing, they sum up the verses.
So you have something to write about.
When you’re writing verses, you’re often writing from abstract. You are writing from thin air, mainly the first verse.
And you have to compare those things to images, sounds, feels, etc. etc. so that way your music can breathe.
The chorus sums up the verses.
The chorus also has to be long and slow, meaning whole notes and half notes. That means that you’re not doing big runs everywhere which makes it easier, and you have very limited options because you want to keep the main hooks within 3 notes. So obviously there’s not much going places with the chorus.
Also, if you really want to change the chorus, it’s really easy, all you do is change the I chord to a vi chord and it will change and sound really great along the way
Anyways, that was my favorite part of making a song.
