Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all how I would start being a producer.
Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the person that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.
Now back to the show
How to be a producer: Step 1 learn the fundamentals
As a producer, you need to understand the basics in music. You must understand the difference between beat and rhythm, you must understand melody and chords, you have to have an awesome sense of beat and rhythm and you have to have your own voice.
The reason why I say this is because as a producer, you need to be able to make different chord patterns and use counterpoint as your advantage.
Making bass lines is almost the single most important factor in determining how many people will dance with your song.
Even though everyone likes the guitar and how it sounds, everyone needs to hear a good bass line in the song in order to remember that song forever.
And that’s sometimes what a producer does, they make bass lines.
And you can’t have bass without beat or rhythm.
Step 2: start making productions
If you’re a hip-hop or pop producer, this is where you need to copy as many hip-hop beats as possible.
You need to copy them and make them your own. You need to mix them as how they were mixed with the original piece.
I’ll give you an example.
If you liked the way that Mockingbird by Eminem sounds, then by all means, remake it and mix it like how it was mixed originally.
The point right now is to get experience making beats.
If you’re a rock or country producer, then this is where you record some of your own songs and produce them as much as you can.
Learn new techniques all this time
Now some tips to help you out on this journey
- Don’t limit yourself to only one genre (While there are many producers who specialize in one particular genre, I don’t recommend that you only focus on one genre because it expands your knowledge on production and music in general.)
- Always be open to produce more songs. (The point right now is not to make money, but rather to gain that experience and build your clientele.
- Put yourself out there for free! I know this sounds contradicting to what a lot of musicians teach, but let’s face it, big money comes to big talent and if you don’t have a name to match the price that you want, I’m sorry friend but you’re not going to get much. Start out humble and start out getting experience by making a few beats for people.
