Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all the best way to develop your own sense of rhythm.
Before we go into it, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to grow as musicians. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for these things.
Now back to the show
The best way to develop a sense of rhythm
So rhythm is a set of balanced and unbalanced notes set in a specific sequence.
For those of you that’s a beginner, it’s simply when you start and end the notes.
Sing this:
Bum bum (pause) bum
Now sing this:
Bum (pause) bum bum
See it’s the same note because you didn’t change the pitch at all, but it’s a different rhythm.
The time that you change the notes timing is what makes it a different rhythm.
Now I know what you might be thinking, “German, that’s great and all but how would I develop my own sense of unique rhythm that’s interesting yet catchy?”
First off I just want to say that you probably aren’t ever going to make a rhythm that’s groundbreaking or revolutionary because every rhythm probably has already been used or invented in the past.
Secondly, there is a way to develop your own flow of making music or just creating different rhythms.
The first is by playing more music.
And when I say play more music, I mean play TONS of music. Don’t stop with one or two songs, no you must play hundreds of songs and learn them all.
That’s the best way to develop a sense of rhythm because all the while you’re playing those songs, your body is secretly and without you knowing, stealing some of those chops and rhythms that you’re playing.
And in a way, that is your own unique sound that no one will have.
You know why?
Because no one on this earth listens to the exact same type of music that you do. Sure everyone listens to Country, Rock, Rap, Hip-hop, and Pop, but do they listen to Ariana Grande along with Sum-41? They might not and even if you do find someone who does listen to that, it’s far and few that will actually listen to everything that you do and even fewer people will be learning how to play an instrument.
Another thing you can do to develop your own sense of rhythm is by practicing basic rhythms.
I remember I once was starting to learn how to play the guitar, my teacher taught me on the guitar how to play chords appropriately.
And so, I learned.
And what happens is that if you want to play the guitar at the correct rhythm, then you have to move your picking hand at the same rhythm as the beat and keep it moving.
And I learned that.
But what happens is that in order to learn that, you have to practice a few basics first.
The first is a basic strumming pattern and it’s basically just Down-down-up-down-up-down-up
In that exercise you are focusing on rhythm and you play down-down as the first two notes because this way you learn how to skip over rhythms without missing rhythm.
It’s a little tricky when you first start out, but once you get the hang of it, a lot of the other rhythms look easy.
The last way I’m going to say to develop a sense of rhythm is to practice clapping the rhythm that you want to do.
Literally clap the rhythm that you want to do.
My guitar teacher always said, “If you can clap it, you can play it.”
So clap it out.
Those are my tips for developing a sense of rhythm.
