Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some best practices of sending an email or letter to someone in the music industry.
Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the person that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for these things.
Now back to the show
How to send a letter or email to someone in the music industry: basics
There are a few things that we should consider when we write an email or letter to someone in the music industry.
The first being that the people that we are reaching out to are professionals in their field and require the same amount of attention that is required for any other professional relationship.
I know personally for me when I first heard that there were such things as music lawyers, I imagined someone with a half dressed suit with sweaty armpits drinking coffee and yelling across the room for their secretary to make the next pot.
Like I just had a very negative thought about music lawyers. I’m not trying to disrespect any music lawyers out there, I’m not saying that, that’s who you are I’m just saying that, that’s what popped in my head.
However, it’s quite the opposite of what music lawyers actually are.
Music lawyers actually went out and got a degree in law from an accredited university. They have practiced before with other music artists out there and they know about contracts and agreements and the music industry just as well as the seasoned music vets.
So, what I’m trying to say is that these are people worth treating with respect and integrity.
It means that if you need to research how to write a formal letter to a lawyer, then by all means research that topic.
But not only that, musicians themselves have spent countless hours on their craft of music.
Whether that be through songwriting, practicing their voice or instrument, writing in a blog, or whatever sort of thing that they do, they have done it through their own hard work. So, it’s not like they’re just playing shows and partying all night long, no they actually have business to attend to if they want to keep the life that they have.
And everyone in the music industry is the same.
Artists, songwriters, bloggers, YouTubers, Lawyers, A&R, Execs, Producers, mixing engineers, mastering engineers, DJs, they all have bills to pay and they are using music to get what they need.
Therefore, they’re all professionals with a suit and tie mindset.
The advanced
It really depends on what you’re contacting the person for.
Like I just sent a letter to a big named musician in my area regarding blogging for them and I had to tailor the email a little to fit my specific needs.
However, there are some general rules of thumb that you should follow.
- Don’t put an MP3 attachment unless they ask for it
- If you want to share music, use a link to YouTube, spotify, or soundcloud.
- Be concise with what you want to share, be short, sweet, and to the point.
- Don’t give them your whole life story, just a little tidbit about your latest accomplishments
Here is an example of a Message I’ve sent before:
Hello! My name is German and I’m a music blogger.
I was actually wondering if I could write content for you guys.
I have had small success with my own blog, I received 192 views to my blog in a single month, and I wanted to write in your music blog to help you guys out.
I look forward to hearing from you
Short, sweet, and to the point. Nothing beats that.
But of course if you’re trying to get signed to a label, then It would be different, if you’re trying to get on the radio it would be different, if you’re trying to get on a blog or a YouTube channel or whatever you want to do, it’s all different,
