How to become a Singer-songwriter from scratch with no musical abilities

Ahh the singer-songwriter, an essential part of the indie music scene. An essential part of the music industry period. Let’s talk about how to become a singer-songwriter.

But first our moment of silence. 

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the person that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray to God to help us to become better musicians.

How to become a Singer-songwriter with no musical experience and from scratch.

So you want to become a Singer-songwriter? Well good for you! It’s an awesome and rewarding career to choose.

The singer-songwriter is an absolutely essential aspect of the music process. Without the singer-songwriter, there would be no lyrics and melody. 

So how do I become one with no experience in music or skills and I want to start from scratch?

Well the first step would be to gain experience. It’s obvious that you can’t do a difficult job without gaining a little bit of experience from lower job positions or maybe even school. 

Therefore, your first step is to gain music experience. 

Gaining music experience

I am a big fan of starting small.

I do not think that someone should be given a thousand dollar guitar as their first guitar, it’s irresponsible.

The only thing that a beginner would do with a thousand dollar guitar is either bang it up, forget about the guitar altogether, or just give up the guitar.

The guitar is a journey to learn. It’s a big process to learn how to play the guitar. It’s a commitment to be able to practice day in and out of an instrument in the hopes that one day, you will become an expert at that instrument.

And you don’t do it for just one year, you have to do it for four or five years of guitar minimum. But that is four or five years of hard practicing. It’s not I’m going to play for 15 minutes and then quit practice, no it’s 4 or 5 years of playing like 6 hours a day your drills and songs and chords and learning new skills. That’s what it takes to learn the guitar.

I know I’ve seen those ads by “famous guitar teaching apps” that teaches you how to play guitar through an app and claim that they will teach you in 6 months everything you need to know.

However, I just don’t think that, that is possible.  

There is no way that someone can learn the guitar simply by practicing less time. That’s impossible.  

You cannot become the best guitarist in the world without practicing for hours a day. 

And trust me, you’re going to get to learn about guitarists and guitars and pedals and amps and different types of guitars and rigs, brands of guitars, strings, picks, different styles of guitar playing, etc. etc. you’re going to learn about all that and it’s going to add to your expertise. 

But honestly, don’t look to music as a get rich quick scheme because it’s not. It’s a long process that’s going to take years to do. 

“But uncle German, I’ve heard that Justin Bieber got discovered on YouTube and became an overnight success? What about that?”

HAHAHA, that’s really nothing. Justin Bieber came out with a movie, the Never Shout Never movie, and in that movie it describes Justin Bieber and how he started out. 

He started out by playing guitar and singing and playing drums at local shows and on the street for years as a KID! 

First he gained experience in music, and then he started playing shows! When I say kid, I  mean I think he was four years old or something like that. And he didn’t get his break until he was like 13.

So, that’s a near 10 years of music experience that he gained throughout those years. Yeah, it’s a long process. 

GERMAN!!! Now I don’t want to do music! Because Music is going to turn into another school! And it sounds like work! You mean to tell me that I can’t get money with music fast? How is someone supposed to live like that? 

Let’s talk about this for a second. If you don’t like going through a long hard process, you wouldn’t do anything worthy of doing in life.

I mean literally name it! Jobs take a long time to make decent money off of it, school takes a long time to do anything cool from it, Sports, you have to develop tons of skills in order to play at the professional level which takes years to acquire, lawyers, doctors, trades take time to learn, anything that is worthwhile will take time and years to learn. 

“But German, even you say that people have been given gifts to do things, so how do I know if I’m not gifted in any of those things?”

That’s a good question and the answer is this. The gift that God will give you to do ANYTHING in life, is your attitude.

If you have the attitude of “Nothing is going to stop me from becoming a professional musician” then you’re going to do it. 

If you know now that even though it takes a gift in order to do things such as that, just know that it’s all hard work. 

Ask God to give you musical abilities and he will give it to you.

Ask God to make you a lawyer, and he will make you a lawyer. 

It’s simple, with God, all things are possible, and with man all things are impossible. 

So pray to God, cause he can help you big time.
