I know what you’re thinking, “German with all of the problems that face a Christian musician in today’s society, how is someone supposed to get ahead in life?”

Before we talk about this, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to overcome the challenges that face us as musicians. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.

Now back to the show

The challenges

So I personally believe that there IS a lot of challenges that Christian musicians face.

There is actually a lot of problems that musicians in general face that impact Christian musicians. From finding ways to promote your music to actually getting paid what you are worth as a musician.

It’s very complicated and almost disturbing to know that musicians in general are considered a trade but are hardly getting paid what they deserve.

Music is considered a trade, that’s a fact.

It’s also hard to believe that the government doesn’t want to help musicians who are rising by offering different musicians grants or financial assistance in their careers.

But let’s talk more about these problems in depth. Let’s start with promotion.

Promotion

Promoting music is difficult. It has always been difficult.

Back in the day, musicians had to perform a thousand shows in order to gain an audience in HOPES that they might get signed to a major record label.

They would work consistently at performing, writing songs, being in the studio, etc. etc. in order to actually build up a following.

And all that time, they are using their own money to do all of those things.

Sounds like a business right?

Well it is.

Anyways, nowadays, I don’t want to say that it’s easier to make a following because there are still years worth of work that you have to do in order to obtain the following. Which is alright!

I personally think that if someone wants to be considered a professional in a field, they have to prove that they are worthy to do something first.

If someone wants millions of dollars, then they have to prove that they can work hard to do it.

Which is why I’m not completely opposed to the fact that we have to spend countless hours on writing in a blog or making YouTube videos in order to promote because that’s the work that’s needed in order to build a following in today’s day.

So even though it is a challenge, It’s a greater challenge having to work day in and out in your blog or YouTube channel and ultimately that’s the challenge.

The Challenge that we face ultimately as Christian musicians in regards to the promotion aspect is our work ethic. Are we willing to work hard to promote our music? Are we willing to struggle and fight to share our music?

If we can overcome that barrier, then we can overcome whatever promotion issues we might face in the future.

Starting out

When you first start out living the music life, It’s actually very sad.

You need to focus on your music career but you need to support yourself in order to do it first.

So, you need a job. You need skills in other fields in order to help you along the way so that you may do the things that you want to do.

I personally don’t know your situation, but if you could find a way to live a frugal life so that you may have the life that you want afterwards, then by all means go for it.

I personally don’t have a lot of money right now, but I know that if I work hard at it enough, and I pray to God to help me, nothing can go wrong.

I personally have more faith in God than in anything else so that helps when I am writing music and blog posts.

So starting out is the difficult part. However, if you can find a pattern where you can live alright and find a way to work hard at your music, that’s all you need.

The more challenging part is biting the bullet when you see all of your friends excelling at all of the things that they do while you’re still struggling from the bottom.

It’s a humbling part, but it’s NEEDED. Everyone needs humility, that’s a good thing.

So embrace it. Embrace the struggle. When everyone will look up to you, they will ask you how you did it. And then you can say it was God who helped you.

I remember I once heard from my preacher that the process is more important than the reward.

Because in the process is where you will learn about all of the things that you will need to know in order to be successful in the field that you want.

And it’s also God’s will that the process be the way it is.

Getting paid

Getting paid is a problem… NOT just in music, but everywhere else! Haha! If you want tons of money, you have to work and work hard at the things that you want!

I believe that if God wants you to have money, then you will have money.

So, that’s why we pray to God to give us money.

And I get it, there are a lot of scammers in the music industry. I would say that even the Record Labels do a little bit of scamming.

But our faith can’t be on a person, it has to be on God.

So, trust in God that God will provide for you.

Obtaining resources for your music

This is a big struggle. Getting guitars is a hassle. Finding a sound engineer is a pain, a producer, mixing speakers, DAWs, education on how to use equipment, etc. etc. there are so many things that are just out of the reach of some starting musicians.

To this, I actually have some advice.

The advice is this.

Work with what you have until you can’t work no more and then when you can afford an upgrade, get the upgrade.

I actually used to mix on headphones before.

But I prayed to God to provide speakers and he provided speakers.

I actually prayed to God for all of my equipment and knowledge that I have today and he has given me these things.

Look if you pray to God to help you, he will help you. Trust in him.
