Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some beginner guitar player tips.

Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to love him with all our hearts. Ask God to help make us the musician that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.

Now back to the show

Beginner guitar player tips

So it’s funny because I just recently started something new.

I don’t want to share exactly what it is but I just started thinking about a whole bunch of things related to the guitar.

And really I just started to think about all of the basics that I had to learn on the guitar and music to really become a great musician.

I had to go through a whole process in order to really become the musician that I am today.

And you know as I started this new thing, I realized that there are actually a whole bunch of basics that I never covered in this blog.

There are music basics and guitar basics that are really essential to the budding guitarist.

And so I decided to share some basic concepts about how to get good at guitar.

Let’s get started.

The main different types of guitars

It’s really important that every guitarist really understands and knows the main different types of guitars.

Why? Because each guitar produces a different timbre.

A timbre is the way that a musical instrument produces sound.

So like if a violin produces an E6 and a guitar produces an E6, they’re the same note but different timbres.

So likewise, different guitars will produce a different timbre.

In order to become the well- rounded guitar player that you need to become, you should know that there are mainly a few different types of guitars.

  1. Acoustic- steel string- this is the type of guitar that is most often played at open mics and has a really mellow and relaxing sound to it. It’s great for playing chords and songwriting which is why whenever you see a songwriter, you will see him with an acoustic steel string, not always, but a lot of times. If you google Gibson Humingbird, that’s a great acoustic steel string guitar. You could also google Tayler Grand stadium model guitars, they have a few of those, I personally love Taylor Guitars the best, I’m just saying! This is probably my favorite type of guitar
  2. Solid Body Electric- When you picture a rockstar, that’s the stereotypical guitar that they have. Gibson and Fender are the big American brand guitars that are out there. But there are a wide array of other Electric brands too: PRS, Shecter, Ibanez, Dean, etc. etc. This is probably my 2nd favorite type of guitar.
  3. Nylon- this is otherwise known as flamenco, classical, or spanish guitar. Usually used in college and in orchestras, the Nylon string is very quiet and usually only goes up to around 18 or 20 frets. It can be cutout, but there are some enthusiasts who just don’t appreciate that. This was my first acoustic guitar.
  4. Semi-hollow – a semi-hollow guitar is similar to an electric guitar where you have to plug in an amp to create a sound, but obviously they differ in the timbre, and the semi-hollow is often described as having a warmer sound to it. And it is true! In my personal opinion it is true! I’ve never had a semi-hollow guitar.
  5. 12-string- they actually make all different string numbered guitars. A typical guitar will have 6 strings. But there are guitars that have 7, 8, 9, 10, I’m most definitely sure that there are 11 stringed guitars out there, and there are 12 stringed guitars too. You play a 12 stringed guitar the same way that you would play a regular guitar, what happens is that on a 12 stringed guitar, the strings are very close to each other on purpose so that you can play the two strings at the same time using the same finger. I’ve actually seen a 32 stringed guitar one time. 12 stringed guitars were the original guitars.

Those are the main types of guitars that you will encounter. Now of course there are specialty guitars that are out there. Like I have seen a quad guitar where there are 4 necks being played by someone who is ambidextrous. I have seen a double necked guitar which was used popularly by Led Zeppelin. I have seen backpack guitars where you can literally fold up the guitar and put it in your backpack, I have seen headless guitars, I have seen kids guitars, etc. etc.

So like you can google the weirdest type of guitars that you’ve ever imagined, I saw a guitar that was made out of legos one time.

Anyways let’s move on.

The parts of the guitar

There are the guitars and now we have to talk about the different parts of the standard guitar.

It basically has a lot of similar elements. For the sake of this blog post we will only go over the Solid-body electric and the Acoustic steel string.

  1. The head- The head is at the top of the guitar, it’s where the brand is usually written. Like on a Gibson it will say Gibson in fancy letters on the head, on an Epiphone it will say Epiphone, On a Fender it will say Fender, etc. etc.
  2. The tuners aka tuning pegs aka pegs- This is where you tune the guitar. On a guitar, you have to set the strings to a special tuning. For the sake of this blog post, we are only going to set it to STANDARD tuning. (Wait German does that mean that there are other tunings out there? YES there are! But !! If you try and look ALL of them up, you will only get confused and frustrated because it’s actually music theory that really takes the full advantage of other tunings. So, just know that for right now, the order from thickest string to thinnest string is E,A,D,G,B,E, or Eddie, Ate, Dynamite, Good,Bye, Eddie.
  3. Next we have the neck, the neck is where you will do almost ALL of your playing. Yes you can use the head to play, but remember this is the BEGINNER guitar tips.
  4. The fretboard- if you really look at the guitars neck, you will notice that there are dots placed every other fret or sometimes 2 frets. You might notice two sets of dots, one that’s located on the edge of the neck and the other that’s on the flat part, The one set of dots on the flat part is actually where the fretboard is. And all of those dots and in between dots are actually frets. That’s where you play 99% of the times. The dots are called dot inlays.
  5. Strings- self explanatory here.
  6. Either sound hole on an acoustic, or pickup on Electric. This is where the sound comes from. A sound hole on the acoustic reverberates sound so that acoustically the guitar will make a sound. A pickup on an electric, does exactly that, it pickups magnetic vibrations that are given off when the electricity runs through the electric guitars strings. It gives off a magnetic field which is picked up by the pickups which will change sound depending on the fret and way you play the strings.
  7. Body, this is the biggest part of the guitar, it holds directly, the sound or pickups, neck, and bridge.
  8. The bridge, this is where the guitar strings rest on the body.

I’ll go over some more tips in the future, but for right now, go and have fun with the new information that I just gave you, I hope this helps.
