Hey everyone! Before we get started on today’s blog post, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to become the person that he wants us to become. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.

Now back to the show

The revolutionary in music

So, I’ve been there before.

I’ve been where you are at.

I’ve been scanning the internet looking for music advice that will lead me to either getting signed by a major or making it big somehow with my music.

But I’ve got to say, that I will often see some kind of misguided music advice.

I don’t know if I would call it misguided but like it’s just off.

Like have you ever heard that dude on the internet who says that what you need in order to make it big in the music industry is something, “new” ?

You need that “new” chord progression or that “new” melody, you ever heard that dude?

And even though he’s not wrong per se.

There’s actually a lot to be said about those “new” things that the dude is talking about.

The first thing that you should know about those new things is that it’s really not new.

Especially if you’re talking about pop music.

And when I say pop, in this instance, I mean anything contemporary.

Meaning anything that’s in today’s mainstream media, rock, rap, hip-hop, pop, country.

All of it in a really big sense is just repeating a lot of the same techniques and tools that we’ve always used.

One of these days I was on Facebook and I saw that Ed Sheeran had gotten sued for copyright infringement against Marvin Gaye.

I remember hearing people say that because Ed Sheeran won the case that it was racism and unfairness and a whole bunch of other things.

First let’s look at this whole situation.

  1. Ed Sheeran was sued for his chord progression that he used.
  2. Everyone in the music industry knows that you cannot copyright a chord progression.
  3. Chris brown came after the All American Rejects and Chris brown’s with you is LITERALLY the same exact chord progression as the All American Rejects’ smash hit Move Along. And no one is saying anything. It’s also the same exact chord progression in She will be loved by Maroon 5.
  4. We musicians like to make things really cool, but in reality, they’re the same concepts and tools and techniques that we’ve always used ever since we were kids.

So like, I get it, you’re trying to find that new chord or that new concept or that new album that’s going to revolutionize everything, but just know that it’s probably already been done before.

So with that in mind…

With that in mind, just keep your songs simple, keep the form that you were told about, keep the techniques to what you already know and you are on your way to making smash hits of your own.
