Hey everyone! Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to follow him throughout all of our lives. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.

5 best lyric tools for songwriters

So these aren’t really tools as so much as techniques.

I see those tools out there on the internet that say that “this thing” or “that thing” will help improve your lyrics.

However, I don’t really like shortcuts when it comes to making lyrics because often, those lyric tools that you see on the internet are cookie cutter solutions to complex problems.

It can’t be your go to place to finish lyrics or even start them.

Believe it or not, even in the United States, different areas have their own way of speaking.

Different people from different backgrounds will have their own sayings and attitudes towards certain subjects that it’s not possible to display your own attitude using cookie cutter methods.

Therefore, we must be creative in finding the solution to displaying our emotions to the world.

So here are some techniques that I would recommend if you want to develop your lyrics.

Freewrite

I absolutely love to freewrite because it feels like I have no limits.

I feel like I can do whatever I want when I’m free writing.

It helps a lot with writers block.

It’s a good way to brainstorm.

And it helps to see progress written down on paper.

Finish the lyric with a random rhyme

Believe it or not, but there is this thing called “filler lyrics” and what they do is that they just randomly fill the lyrics with a random phrase that might not make any sense, but it sounds so good that they just keep it in the song.

A good example of “filler lyrics” is in the song Hey Jude by the Beatles. Do you remember the lyrics, “the movement you need is on your shoulder.”

Well that is a filler lyric right there.

Fillers lyrics help to move the song in the direction that you want it to move.

And also they can finish a statement by adding a bit of mystery behind the song.

A little lesson in songwriting, sometimes you want to add a little bit of a mystery to your song so that people are left wondering why you put that there. It helps, trust me!

Write poetry

Writing poetry helps with the creation of ideas and lyrics so that you can create imagery with your words.

I’m pretty sure you’ve heard the term Rap before.

Well rap stands for Rhythm and Poetry.

That’s all that rap stands for.

The original form of songwriting was rapping.

I’m pretty sure that you guys remember King David from the Bible.

Well that’s all that King David did.

He would write poems and sing them over a harp melody.

And that’s exactly what rap is today, except we have drums and synthesizers and producers creating the instrumentals.
