Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all some great theories for beginner songwriters. Keep in mind that these tips that I’m about to show you are tips that I have followed myself and I would actually say a big chunk of musicians that you see on big stages follow these tips even nowadays.
Before we get into it, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to follow him throughout all of our lives. Ask God to make us musicians that would serve him no matter what. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.
Now back to the show
Great theories for beginner songwriters
So there are a lot of tips that I would recommend to follow when you first start out songwriting.
The reason for following these tips is that when you first start out songwriting, we are quick to want to feel emotion and to feel the music.
We want to get goosebumps fast and to move people strongly.
So these next few tips that I’m about to share with you all is going to do exactly that.
Now, I know that there are many ways to get a crowd singing and dancing, but just keep in mind that these methods that I’m about to share are followed by the greats.
So without further ado, let’s talk about these methods.
Start slow

What happens is that it’s actually easier to digest slow songs than it is to digest fast songs.
When you hear a guitar solo that is fast, it’s great and all, but even Slash (7x guitarist of the year by Guitar world magazine says, “When you use fast guitar solos, they’re really meant to show more raw energy than anything else. It’s not really meant to make a crowd feel or sing.” )

And it’s quite evident in a lot of songs that slow guitar solos are actually favored amongst guitarists too.
But not just solos are slow, entire songs themselves are slow.
According to Rolling Stone magazine, Pop hits were really slow AGAIN in 2018
A link to this article is right here
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/pop-hits-2018-slow-tempo-788045/
That’s because it’s easier to digest and feel the music when it’s slow than when it is fast. The average Tempo to these songs are 90 BPMS, which in case you don’t know 60 BPM is sometimes the slowest that you can go on a lot of metronomes.
So it’s obviously favored that slow songs are superior in making a connection with the crowd.
Keep it simple

https://www.mic.com/articles/107896/scientists-finally-prove-why-pop-music-all-sounds-the-same
In the article above, it states that simplicity is key in all music.
The reason why is because when you have 7 and 9 chords being played against a modal interchange, It might sound interesting, but really it’s not strong enough to support any melody or mood.
Music is all about creating a mood. Usually sad songs have minor chords and happy songs have major chords, Sad songs are slow and happy songs are fast.
But the theory behind chords is that you lay a foundation of harmony with the chords that you play.
But if you’re playing 7 and 9 chords, the chords themselves become weak. And the more notes that you introduce to the chord, the weaker the chord gets.
Sometimes those chords are very useful in songs but be aware that it’s more favored to use them sparingly in pop music.
In Jazz those chords are used a lot and even in some hip-hop it’s used.
But even in Hip-hop songs those chords are used sparingly.
So just keep it simple and try and not to stray away from it too much.
Talk about love

The reason for this is because love is actually something easy to talk about.
I mean if you just start at love, what kind of love are we talking about?
Are we talking about puppy dog love? Are we talking about true love? Are we talking about heart broken love? Are we talking about the love of God? What kind of love are we talking about?
Now as Christian musicians we have a deeper purpose in life than to just talk about love, we have to talk about God.
So, if you could talk about God and love at the same time, it would work out just fine.
