Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all a blog post that I think needs to be addressed.
Before we get into it, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to guide us more towards him each day. Ask God to give us strength to follow him throughout everything that we do. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.
Now back to the show
Who says that the starving artist is real?
You know what happened?
I was researching topics on what to write about.
and the idea popped into my head as to what it’s really like to be a musician.
I mean what’s the real story behind being a musician and why do so many people still do it if there really is no money involved?
Let’s talk about it.
Misconceptions
So the misconception is that musicians don’t make that much money at all.
I can’t really say that, that’s true anymore.
I mean even for the longest time I thought the same way as well.
I thought that if I was going to be a guitarist, then I would make no money doing the things that I loved to do.
I mean even in the school literature that they give us in public school states that musicians don’t make that much money.
Literally I remember in the 8th grade, I had gotten pretty good at guitar.
And at this point in time, I started to consider music as my career.
And I remember that we were given an aptitude test to see what kind of career we would fit in best.
And I feel glad at the fact that they said that I would fit in well with the STEM category.
But at the same time, I was heartbroken because I wanted to do music.
And then I looked at how much musicians made, and it didn’t promise a whole bunch if I’m honest.
I mean someone with a doctorate in music production I think on average made $75,000 dollars a year.
I’ll be honest I was expecting the high end of pay for musicians because of all the things that I saw on the media.
But I digress.
So for the longest time, I thought myself that I wasn’t going to make that much money.
UNTIL, I was in senior year of high school.
My friend, did a research paper on how much Music producers made.
And he used sources from like Gale and credible databases, not just Google.
And he found that musicians and producers could make an average of $90,000 dollars a year.
And I remember I was watching this and I was like, thinking to myself man this kid did this right.
And I started to do my own research too.
And sure enough, I started finding musicians who people don’t know that much, but are still making money doing the things that they love.
And now, that I’m in the position to get paid as a musician, I can’t help but to think, God was right.
The bible says in Proverbs 14:23 KJV it states, “In all labor there is profit: But the talk of the lips tenders only to penury.”
Now let’s talk a little bit of backstory with Proverbs.
Proverbs was written by the wisest and richest man that ever lived.
And God promised this man that he would be the wisest and richest man that would ever live.
His name was King Solomon.
And what happened was that when I read this bible verse, I read the entire context. I actually read the entire chapter.
And I encourage you to read the entire chapter as well.
And I couldn’t help but to think to myself, “So wait a minute, Solomon, saw HIS MUSICIANS, and still decided to say, “in all labor there is profit…” He saw his Maids and his Servants, and his people and still decided to say, “In all labor there is profit.” That means that there were musicians in his time who were wealthy.
Therefore, I have come to the conclusion, above my friends research paper, above my parents and teachers, above my own beliefs, I have come to the conclusion that it is possible to make money off of music.
And the person who PROMISES that, is no man, but God himself.
It’s actually one of the reasons why I’ve stuck around with this music blog for so long.
It’s because I’ve been riding on the promise of God all these days.
And if you want proof that this is real, look around yourself at all the careers that you know.
And ask yourself this question.
Can you make a lot of money doing that?
and if you find that you can, then you know that it is true.
And that the promise of God is true.
And that God is alive because of it.
