Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all the secret behind lyrics.
Before we get into it, let’s have our moment of silence.
At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to help us to follow him throughout all of our days. Ask God to give us strength to honor him and to be holy no matter what. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.
Now back to the show
Let’s talk about pop music for a second
So the trend in pop music is that you pick a topic that is narrow.
And you can take inspiration from your very own experiences or it could be from a book or from a movie, try and steer clear from other songs, but even still maybe even a song.
And what you do is you write about that topic from your very own perspective.
However, there are so many tricks behind those simple stanzas that we read as lyrics.
There is a lot of poetry involved.
Yes in order to be a good lyricist, you need to spend some time writing some poems so that you can craft excellent and impactful lyrics.
But think of Poetry as the training ground to make great lyrics.
Because there are actually a few other tricks involved to make lyrics sound great.
So after you’ve written some great poems, try and incorporate some other musical elements to those lyrics.
Part of those musical elements is in the lyrics.
So what happens is that if you can’t think of anything to rhyme with the lyrics that you have already, there is a trick that many modern musicians do that will completely show up everyone at the songwriting gig.
It’s called filler lyrics.
And what these lyrics do is that they just fill up space.
There have been a many great musicians who use filler lyrics all the time.
The Beatles was one of them.
In the song Hey Jude, the lyrics, “The movement you need is on your shoulder.”
That was filler lyrics.
And actually it’s recommended that in every song that you write, you include at least some filler lyrics because it adds an aura of mystery that the audience just can’t get enough of.
If you do it right, it can add depth to the lyrics that actually create goosebumps.
Another aspect of music that you should include in your lyrics is the ability to hold out or shorten the lyrics or repeat the lyrics in a manner that is appealing.
Usually repetition happens in the chorus, but it can happen anywhere.
And holding out lyrics longer will emphasize what needs to be said.
I know it sounds difficult to believe that a lot of your favorite songs are just random words sometimes but you’ll get used to it.
Just know that if something doesn’t make sense in the song, it’s probably because it’s not meant to make sense.
Anyways, that’s the secret sauce to lyrics.
