Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to share with you all a new tool that I just learned about.

Let’s talk about it.

Different melodic phrases

So I just learned about some different types of melodic phrases that I think that we should all use in our songwriting.

And I’ll be honest with you, when you’re a musician, you learn something new every single day, so now that I know these things, I’ve actually written a few songs with these phrases and man does it sound really good.

So here are some melodic phrases that we should implement in our music.

The arch

So the arch is where you form a melody that starts somewhere, goes up, and then falls back down.

I was using this melodic phrase just a second ago and it is so powerful.

it helps to create a dynamic that is just hard to beat.

The inverted arch

The inverted arch is the same melody but goes down and then comes back up.

Some people use the inverted arch to contrast the arch.

So say for example you use the arch first for the first stanza and then in the second stanza you use an inverted arch and it gives it a really cool effect.

Flatline

A Flatline melody gives the feeling of conversation and a feeling of anxiety.

It helps to build tension.

It also helps for really fast runs.

As one note melodies are often easier to sing than other types of melodies

These melodies can often also be used to get a crowd singing because they are so easy to sing.

It just depends on how you use it.

Zig zag melody

A zig zag melody is another melody that is used for conversation.

I think this has to be my favorite melody between the flatline and the zig zag.

The reason is because it has been used in some of my favorite songs.

Basically you go up and down in a very fast manner. So like it will alternate between 2 notes really fast.

Not ridiculously fast. But like 8th note to 8th note it will alternate between the notes.

The power comes when you mix these ups.

So you mix these up.

So say for example you use a flatline melody in the verses then in the chorus you would use an arch type of melody.

And you go up in the chorus and go down in the verses.

That’s basically how that works.
